CALL TO ORDER:

President Caroline Pickens called the 88th Annual Meeting to order at 12:25pm.

WELCOME

President Pickens welcomed everyone and reminded the members that the national AAUW election voting was about to begin and that brochures of the various candidates were available at the tables in the reception area.

2013 STATE CONFERENCE OFFICIAL MINUTES

The recording secretary of AAUW of Virginia, Ann Johnson, stated the minutes had been approved by the Reading Committee and then by the board in July 2012. There was a summary of the minutes as a hand out to the Conference packet.

APPOINTMENT OF MINUTES REVIEW COMMITTEE

The Minutes Reviewing Committee will be Ann Johnson, chair, Smith Mountain Branch; Bunny Jarrett, Falls Church Branch; and Marie Callo,Portsmouth Branch.

REGISTRATION REPORT Gay Olsen, Co-Local Arrangements Chair, gave the registration report. There were 98 members registered and 1 guest for a total of 99. There were 22 branches represented.

INTRODUCTIONS

President Pickens thanked all the members of the board for their hard work this past year. She then recognized the past state presidents who were present: Kay Gravatt, Neola Waller, Nancy Joyner, Peggy Stotz, Laura Wimmer, Rosemary Plum, Kristin Moyer,Marion Stillson, and Dianne Blais. She recognized all the branch presidents and thanked them for theirwork this past year, and then thanked the conference local arrangements co-chairs,Gay Olsen and Laura Wimmer, both of the Greater Richmond Branch, for the arrangements for the conference. Anita Aymer, Vice President for Programs, recognized all the First Timers, those AAUW members who are new to AAUW or havenot previously attended a state conference. A drawing was held, and two First Timers received gifts.

FINANCE REPORT

Nancy Thompson, Vice President for Finance, noted the finance report wasone of the handouts provided with the Conference packet. As of March12, 2013there was a balance of $9,921.00 in the checking account, and $26,904 in investments.

AAUW FUNDS

Peggy Stotz, AAUW Funds chair, stated that Virginia members had contributed $72,275.57 to the various AAUW Funds. She reminded the members there was a handout provided with the Conference packet, which included the list of Names Honored. Those who were honored and present were asked to stand and give their name and branch so the attendees could recognize them.

NOMINTATING COMMITTEE

Sandy Lawrence, Northern Virginia District Representative and the Nominating Committee chair,announced the slate of officers for 2013-2015. Additional candidates had the opportunity to contact the Nominating Committee chair within 30 days of receipt of the Vision, but no additional candidates were nominated. Nominees are as follows: Sally Sledge, Vice President for Membership;Nancy Thompson, Vice President for Finance; and Sherry Warren, Recording Secretary.

2013 ONE MEMBER/ONE VOTE PROCEDURES

Jane Newell, chair of the Voting and Elections Committee, reminded the members we would be using theOne Member/One Vote processfor the second time this year. Ballots will be sent electronically to those who opted for online voting and by mail to all others. The voting will begin May 1 until the end of May. The quorum is 7%. Last year we had 33% voting statewide. This year, though, national AAUW elections will be running concurrently from April 15- June 10. Therefore members will need to vote twice. This year there will be recognition for the branches that have the highest number of members voting. The goal is 40%. She then thanked the members of the Voting and Elections Committee: Mary Kate Black, Vienna Area; Elizabeth Lipscomb, Lynchburg; Wilma Robinson, Norfolk; Ann Johnson, AAUW of Virginia Recording Secretary; and finally Peggy Gross, Alexandria who passed away this month. Jane noted that contributions in Peggy’s memory may be made to the AAUW Funds Educational Opportunities Fund.

INVITATION TO STATE CONFERENCE 2014

Ann Johnson and Margee Kauffman, Smith Mountain, invited the attendees to the 2014 State Conference to be held April 4-6 at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. They passed out packets about Smith Mountain Lake for all the attendees and showed a short video about the area.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Pickens reminded the attendees that the National Convention is June 9-12 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She stated that former U.S. Senator from Maine, Olympia Snowe will be receiving the AAUW Achievement Award.

President Pickens then reminded the attendees the Summer Leaders Meeting would be either July 13 or July 20th in either Charlottesville or Staunton. It will be the follow-on to last year’s leaders meeting.

Angela Booker, Co-Vice President for Public Policy, stated that AAUW of Virginia was working on a proposal for an Impact Grant from National on two projects, Equal Pay and Title IX: STEM. She asked individuals to sign up to work on these two projects.

OTHER

President Pickens thanked Kay Koehler, Greater Roanoke, who has been the Webmaster for many years, and also Ann Johnson, Recording Secretary, Smith Mountain, whose term is over this year, for their outstanding service to AAUW of Virginia.

ADJOURNMENT

President Pickens thanked everyone for coming. She stated and that she hopes to see everyone in 2014 at Smith Mountain Lake. She thenadjourned the meeting at 1:10pm.
