Plan 1A: Stories by the same author
Using the delightful illustrations & books of Michael Foreman, chn have many opportunities to practise simple, compound & complex sentences with powerful verbs. They then create their own stories based around I’ll Take You to Mrs Cole.
Grammar focus:
1. Extend the range of sentences with more than one clause by using a wider range of conjunctions
2. Use conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time and cause.
3. Use and punctuate direct speech.
4. Use prepositions of time, place and cause.
Plan 2A: Information texts / Chn study the structure & language features of non-chronological reports before planning, researching & finally composing their own sports report. At the end of the plan the class explore persuasive language & different points of view, ending in a debate.
Grammar focus:
1. Extend the range of sentences with more than one clause by using a wider range of conjunctions
2. Use conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time and cause.
3. Use grammatical terminology
Plan 1A: Instructions and explanations / Chn will learn about instructions and explanations based around the glitzy world of the game show! They will learn about features of explanations before going on to write their own based on a game show with a special treat at the end!
Grammar focus:
1. Use grammatical terminology specifically by beginning to recognise the concept of a verb and by choosing and using powerful verbs
2. Understand that writing can be first or third person.
3. Use and understand grammatical terminology
Plan 2A: Stories from other cultures / In this three week plan chn will have plenty of opportunities to explore Indian folk tales and myths before performing their own oral re-telling and written adaptations. They will learn about adverbial clauses to make their writing more interesting and use commas to organise their writing.
Grammar focus:
1. Use grammatical terminology, specifically using and recognising adjectives, nouns and prepositional phrases
2. Use prepositions to express time, place and cause
Plan 1A: Poetry: Creating images / Use a selection of poems to explore how to create images using words. Chn find & use adjectives & adjective phrases to convert a poem to prose. Use their voice to add excitement to a poem performance & compose poems using the themes of animals & weather.
Grammar focus:
1. Use grammatical terminology specifically by using and recognising adjectives, nouns and adverbs
2. Understand and use adverbials and fronted adverbials.

Plan 2A: Humorous poems / Chn will enjoy these humorous poems about teachers which will inspire learning about powerful verbs, verb tenses, adverbs and adverbial phrases. Chn use the poems they read as models for writing their own verses & poems.

Science

Animals, including Humans / Find out about food groups & healthy balanced diets. Study the human digestive system & how food is transported around the body. Investigate skeletons & look closely at bones, joints & muscles & compare with animal skeletons. Discover effects of exercise.

RE & PSHE

New Beginnings.
Getting on and Falling Out. / In PSHE we look at how to make someone feel welcome. Overcome feelings of fearfulness. Solve a problem .Calm down and help someone to calm down.
We examine how to work cooperatively to help a group. How to be a really good friend. How to keep calm and overcome feelings of anger. How to solve a difficult problem with a friend.
RE / Right and Wrong- What religions show about how we should live our lives. Why we have rules
The importance of festivals in religion- The beliefs that are expressed in festivals and what they mean

Creative Curriculum

Romans / As Historians: to describe what life was like for a Roman soldier, describing some of the army tactics used. To describe domestic life of the different Roman social classes. We will describe the main features of a Roman villa and look at Romans leisure activities. We will identify similarities and differences between Roman and modern day coins. We will discover what happened in Pompeii in AD79 and describe how knowledge of Roman life has been constructed from Pompeii’s archaeological site. We will also describe some of the different gods and goddesses worshipped by the Romans.
As Geographers:
To say when and where the Roman Empire took place. Understand why people settle in different places and why the Romans wanted to invade Britain. To describe famous buildings in ancient Rome and consider their purpose
As Artists and designers:
Children will create a mosaic using 3 different colours. We will plan and design Roman shields as well as use Paper Mache to create Roman helmets.
As Writers:
The children will become myth busters, solve problems, answer questions, debate over the ‘best’ God or Goddess and compose their own Roman Myth.
As Performers:
Re-live the Romans through Roman day workshops and visits. We will re-enact the different attacking and defensive techniques used in Roman battles.
Technology
How can we do independent research? What technology did the Romans use?
Knowledge of the World
Follow their travels, understanding their culture and how it has affected us today.
Perseverance
Do not just take the first answer possible always ask why, when, where, how etc?
Enterprise
To practise and demonstrate the Roman Army techniques in front of the school in an assembly
