One $10,000 award will allow an individual during his or her pediatric critical care fellowship, or within 2 years of completing an accredited critical care fellowship, to gain research experience by conducting basic scientific or clinical research. You must be a current member of the AAP Section on Critical Care to qualify.

NEW INVESTIGATOR RESEARCH AWARD

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Critical Care Medicine New Investigator Research Award is to promote understanding of critical illness and injury in children through clinical and/or laboratory research. The grant will provide support for a research project to an individual who has demonstrated aptitude for clinical or basic science during his or her pediatric critical care fellowship or during the first two years of post-fellowship experience as a junior faculty member in an academic setting.

The award will be judged on the following criteria:

SPECIFIC GUIDELINES

The Award

The Award is designed to provide funding for investigation generally involving basic or clinical research that will lead to improve understanding of critical illness or injury in children.

The Investigator

The investigator should be a physician who is in the first three year of pediatric critical care fellowship or someone who has completed an accredited critical care fellowship within the past 2 years. The investigator must have a MD, DO degree, or foreign equivalent. He or she also may have obtained a PhD degree. It is the investigator’s responsibility to spend at least 50% of their time devoted to research and without significant clinical responsibility during the funding period.

The Sponsor

The sponsor is the administrative link between the investigator and the intuition. The sponsor should be a full-time faculty member of an academic institution. He or she may be from the basic science or clinical faculty and may have either a MD or PhD degree. A sponsor should have demonstrated a commitment to training of scientists as evidenced by a list of previous trainees, and productivity as evidenced by publications, as well as peer reviewed grant support.

Change of Sponsor

If during the course of the year, the sponsor changes, the American Academy of Pediatrics must be notified in writing immediately. The investigator must designate another sponsor, supply the sponsor’s curriculum vitae (including previous trainees) as well as a letter from the sponsor indicating his or her willingness to serve in this capacity and specifically how any problems created by the change in sponsor will be solved.

Budget

The Award is for $10,000. There are no indirect costs. The funds may not be used either for the investigator’s salary or for major equipment costing more than $500 per item. The funds may also not be used for consultant fees, service contracts, books, subscriptions to journals, construction, dues, items generally considered to be overhead (i.e. telephone, lights, etc.), travel, or publication costs. The funds may be used for salary other than the principal investigator’s (e.g. laboratory or research technician), patient related clinical tests, or minor supplies and equipment.

Grant funds may be rebudgeted. Any transfer of funds for a different expense in excess of $500 must be authorized by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The request must fully describe the transfer and how the funds will be used. This letter must be co-signed by the grantee institution’s fiscal officer as well as the principal investigator and sponsor. Subsequent financial reports must reference these transfers.

Method of Payment

Grant payments are disbursed at the beginning of the funding period to the institution.

Concurrent Funding

The principal investigator may be eligible for this Award if he or she is receiving direct support from any other local, state, or national agency as long as the funds are used in conjunction with pre-existing support with no areas of duplication. A copy of the title, abstract, budget, and budget justification pages of all existing or pending grants must accompany this proposal. Project funding for supplies and equipment directed to the sponsor is permissible.

Presentation of Results at American Academy of Pediatrics,

Critical Care Section Annual Meeting - October, 2001

The Awardee will be invited to present his or her results during the annual meeting of the Critical Care Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics in the year of the grant termination. Since funds from the Award may not be used for travel, the Awardee will need to arrange for alternative funding to provide for travel to the meeting should he/she wish to present the results.

The Awardee will be eligible for the In-Training Award or Best Clinical or Scientific Abstract only if he/she submits the abstract in accordance with the Scientific Session guidelines.

Scientific Progress Report

One month after the termination of the Award, a final scientific progress report must be submitted (maximum three pages single-spaced) including plans for future research in the area.

Grant Review

The Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Critical Care Section will appoint a Chair and Subcommittee to review all grant proposals. After receipt of the applications, the chair will assign two reviewers to each proposal. The assigned reviewers will constitute the study section. The group will then meet to decide the relative priorities of the applications. One award per year will be made.

PREPARATION OF THE APPLICATION

General

Use standard type (12 pitch - 12 characters per inch). Word processing equipment used must be of letter quality. Sixty (60) lines per page is the maximum allowed. Submit 5 well reproduced copies (printing both sides of the sheet) with the original typed application. Do not leave any area blank: indicate N/A or None if not applicable. Failure to follow instructions will result in return of the application and disqualification from consideration. 10 --Lay summary. This summary should be written for individuals not familiar with scientific work. It should be prepared for direct publication in a local newspaper.

The letter from the sponsor should include assurance that the candidate will be permitted to spend least 50% of his or her time as pure research during the funding period. The letter should also indicate that appropriate research facilities will be made available. The last section should be a letter of recommendation indicating the unique facets of the principal investigator that qualify him or her for this Award as well as any potential weaknesses.

18 --Award budget allocation. See Budget page 2. The total may not exceed $10,000. It is permissible to devote 100% of the budget to either the personnel salary (except the PI’s) or supplies, but no more than $500 may be used for any one piece of equipment.

19 --Award budget justification. Each item over $50 must be justified separately. The budget justification will be considered along with the budget justification of the entire project (item #21) and the two must relate to each other.
