Activities Scheduled (Significant)—

Summary of AAG Public/Private Affinity Group strategic planning teleconference Tuesday October 14th at 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM Eastern Time.

Agenda:

  • Our thoughts for the 2009 AAG Annual Meeting in our rank order priority --
  • Social function is to be a light breakfast bar.
  • Panel session on mid-career internship opportunities for geographers in Public-Private Practice--Tabled

Michael Solem at the AAG is project director for EDGE and Ken Foote at CU Boulder and Jan Monk are co-PIs. EDGE is examining how graduate programs are preparing people for diverse careers across sectors. Their work has involved surveying faculty, students, and employers, interviewing in PhD and Masters programs, preparing publications and web-based materials and now sponsoring various workshops and programs at AAG regional and national meetings….good, valuable stuff…

  • Need to establish formal leadership for the Group—for future discussion
  • Monthly Call Calendar/Schedule---suggested by Jeff Young
  • Thoughts on a Future PPAG Conference in 2010 prior to the 2010 Annual Meeting in WashingtonDC (provide by Ed)

“…Perhaps conducted in the half-day immediately preceding the AAG

annual meeting in parallel with the AAG affairs meeting largely executed by

Academic leadership. Perhaps for the 2010 Annual Meeting in WashingtonDC we

consider on the day prior to the start of the AAG Annual meeting itself

holding a PPAG conference designed to attract 50 PPAG member attendees. ………

  • Other Business—None presented
  • Actions/Next Steps—Plan for Las Vegas

Future Plans and Directions—

  • Expanded Thoughts on a Future PPAG Conference in 2010 prior to the 2010 Annual Meeting in WashingtonDC (suggestion provide by Ed Butterworth )

“…Target event for the half-day immediately preceding the AAG

annual meeting to parallel with the AAG affairs meeting largely attended by

Academic leadership. For the 2010 Annual Meeting in WashingtonDC we

consider the day prior to the start of the AAG Annual meeting itself

holding a PPAG conference designed to attract 50 PPAG member attendees. With

this structure, we could send selective invitations to key people in

government and industry to introduce them the PPAG concept. Although we

would expect to get a few responses from individual on the invite list who

are not already AAG members, it would be a good opportunity build the case

for PPAG in government and industry.

Structure for a PPAG event might be:

Session 1 (12:01 PM): Planetary Session and Panel on PPAG with meet and greet

time Session 2 (01:30 PM): 2 or 3 tracks of PPAG topic session designed for

10 to 20 participants Session 3 (02:45 PM): 2 or 3 tracks of PPAG topic

session designed for 10 to 20 participants Session 4 (04:00 PM): PPAG keynote

with light social Option 5 (06:30 PM): Prepaid, preregistered Dinner at local

interesting restaurant (e.g. Jaleo) with flexibility to add people the

afternoon of event. Target meal cost to $20 to $30 - not inclusive of

alcohol. No speaker, just people meeting and eating….”

Business Meeting at the AAG Conference in Boston—N/A
