Speakers Bios

Mr. Bill Gordon Keynote and the Power of Kindness Breakout Session

A retired but still active part time counsellor with Elk Island Public Schools in Alberta, Bill has traveled across Canada speaking to thousands of students, teachers, parents and organizations. Known for his speaking style which combines humour, storytelling and messages focusing on such topics as organizational excellence, communication, character building, human relationships and the power of kindness, Bill is excited about every opportunity to share his ideas and messages with others who are enthusiastic about making a positive difference in the lives of children and youth.

A former recipient of the Murray Jampolsky Award for Outstanding School Counsellors in Alberta, Bill is currently a member of the executive of the Alberta Coalition for Healthy School Communities, an organization dedicated to the promotion of comprehensive school and community health. His particular interest in healthy schools and families lies in the social-emotional “climate” within them.

Bill is most proud of being married for 44 years to his junior high sweetheart, Jean, of his sons and daughters in-law, all of whom are educators, and of being a grandpa to Lucy, Micah and Julia all of whom are probably “doomed” to enter the field of education as well.

The Things Young People Need- discusses the kind of adults who make a significant difference in a young person’s life.

The Power of Kindness: Originally developed for high school leadership conferences as a way of encouraging youth to make a difference in their own schools through on-going acts of kindness and beauty instead of acts of bullying and vandalism. My most requested presentation for not only youth groups, but community, volunteer and organizational conferences.

Melissa Seaborg Post Suicide School Strategies

This presentation will be focused on group therapy for post-crisis suicidal adolescents. The “Letting Go of Suicidality” group was created out the genuine care and concern for suicidal youth. Post-crisis suicidal adolescents will benefit from this intervention method as it will encourage group members to understand suicidality, identify coping strategies, support networks and move forward positively. This easy-to-use manual provides the facilitator with all of the instruction and handouts necessary to create a great group dynamic. It will be helpful to counsellors who work in schools, agencies, or private practice. The manual is comprised of eight session plans to be used over the course of four to eight weeks.

Melissa Seaborg is a Provisionally Registered Psychologist in Alberta. She completed her Masters in Counselling Psychology and is invested in facilitating groups for adolescents experiencing suicidality. Currently she works for Alberta Health Services.

Karen Sudom Autism Adventures

Explore Autism Spectrum Disorder from an Autistic perspective. With personal examples of challenges and coping strategies, Karen provides insights into ASD.

Karen Sudom and two of her three children have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Founder of Spectrum Educational Services, Karen facilitates a weekly group for preteens and teens with ASD called ASDreams. She shares with educators, parent groups, churches, mental health agencies and other service providers to increase understanding not only about ASD, but also what it is like to be Autistic. A personally significant presentation was to grade eight students in the same classroom where her favorite teacher, Mr. Middleton, taught her grade eight. Karen serves on the City of Medicine Hat’s Advisory Committee for Disability Issues and is active in the city’s poverty reduction movement.

Lana Bentley & Paula Winstanley Eating Disorders

Lana and Paula’s presentation will provide an overview of eating disorders including (but not limited to) the following topics:

1)Understanding the diagnosis

2)Signs of an eating disorder

3)Treatment modalities

4)Strategies when working with somebody who has an eating disorder

5)Overview of the Calgary Eating Disorder Program

6)School Implications

Lana is the Clinical Supervisor of the Calgary Eating Disorder Program while Paula works there as their Consultant and Family Counsellor.

Dr. Bonnie Haave High Conflict Divorce

The damage done to children by high conflict divorces parallels any other form of child abuse. There are things that schools can do to help build resilience and things that escalate problems and conflict. This session will help participant understand the dynamics and pitfalls of high conflict divorces and learn what to do, and perhaps more importantly what to avoid.

Dr. Haave has worked in the area of counselling and assessment with children, teens, adults and families and has been a Registered Psychologist in Alberta since 1976. She has done presentations on high conflict divorce locally, nationally and internationally as well as being an Expert Witness. She has worked with the Court of Queen’s Bench in Alberta in developing procedures and practices that can be of assistance in Court. It is an important objective of her work to raise the awareness of the Courts to the needs of children caught in these difficult situations.

Claire Malcolm Working with Traumatized Students

This workshop will explain the role that trauma has in the lives of students. Knowing how trauma impacts students, school personnel, you will be better able to identify and support children with trauma issues. The workshop content will then move beyond theory andprovides useful tools to assist in the support and education of these children.

Participants will: 1) obtain an understanding of the theory of trauma and related issues facing students and, 2) Be introduced to a tool to improve identification and organize skills to better support these students.

Claire has 14 years of direct clinical work with children, youth and families. She has experience with both private and public service providers and is the founder of the Child Recovery Centre. Currently she is also employed by Alberta Health Services in the role of family counsellor with the Student Health Partnership. Her approach is based on the Fairy Tale Model of trauma treatment developed by trauma expert Ricky Greenwald.

Bruce Kirkby

Closing Keynote

Award Winning Explorer, Writer and Photographer

For more than 20 years, Bruce Kirkby has led a life of exploration and high adventure. His journeys have taken him to the wildest and most remote corners of the planet, from Africa to the high Artic; from Mt. Everest to Arabia. Kirkby has been shot at in Borneo, taken hostage in Ethiopia, survived crocodile attacks in the Nile and weathered high altitude storms in Alaska. A weekly columnist with the Globe and Mail, and a contributing editor to Explore, Canadian Geographic and Time, Kirkby is also a bestselling author, award winning photographer and the former host of CTV’s No Opportunity Wasted.

Bruce has built his life upon the road less traveled. After graduating with a degree in Engineering Physics – and realizing that a life in a cubicle was not for him – Bruce packed his bags and stepped into the unknown, departing for northern Pakistan with just a bicycle and tent at the age of 21. He’s being going full-tilt since then.

What sets Bruce apart is his ability to share the magic, the mystery and the learning’s from these experiences with others. Bruce’s enthusiasm and his belief in the magic of human potential is contagious.
