AAA Move their Publishing Arrangements to Wiley-Blackwell
The American Anthropological Association has chosen to partner with Wiley-Blackwell from 2008 to publish its journals, newsletters, plus AnthroSource —the premier online portal to full-text anthropology articles serving the research and teaching needs of scholars and practitioners around the world.
The AAA Executive Board’s decision to partner with Wiley-Blackwell was the result of a year-long process, centering on a detailed request for proposals, evaluation of publisher submissions, interviews, and reference checks with other scholarly societies. The request for proposals (RFP) was developed with input from journal editors, authors and members and was sent to nine publishers, of which six responded with proposals, and five were interviewed.
The AAA Executive Board voted unanimously in favor of a partnership agreement with Wiley-Blackwell, recognizing the company’s stellar reputation for creative partnerships with learned societies, its substantial investment in innovative technology and its world-wide network of offices. Wiley-Blackwell offers the AAA the greatest potential to propel AnthroSource to the cutting edge of digital publishing and to expand the readership of AAA’s publications and the dissemination of anthropological research to critical new international audiences. As with all our society partnerships, journal editors and the AAA will retain complete editorial control over publication content and form, as well as decision-making authority over subscriptions pricing.
Information for Institutional Subscribers
From 2008, subscribers to the individual publications are for the first time offered the opportunity to receive electronic versions of the AAA journals. Previously electronic access was only available to libraries who subscribed to the AnthroSource portal. Now libraries can choose to continue to take AnthroSourceor to select which titles they want and in which format.
All of the journal titles now offer the options of a Premium subscription (print plus enhanced online access with perpetual access rights) or an Online Only subscription.
For 2008, the online versions of the AAA journals will be hosted on Blackwell Synergy ( with all of the usual library benefits of COUNTER-compliant usage data, OpenURL linking, IP access, etc. A current Premium or Online Only subscription also includes ten years of backfile access, back to 1997, with perpetual access to the paid-for year.
Subscribers to AnthroSource can continue to subscribe to the portal, which includes archival content and access to all of the AAA publications, as before. For 2008, AnthroSource will not be included in the Blackwell Collections or Wiley license deals. It will continue to be hosted at access controlled at Wiley-Blackwell. In 2009 we will develop a new platform for Wiley-Blackwell content, of which AnthroSource will be a part. More information about this platform will follow in due course.
