A Wrinkle in Time - Chapter 2 – “Mrs. Who”

(blue book)

p. 13, Mrs. Murry tells Meg, “one thing I’ve learned is that you don’t have to understand things for them to be.” What do you think she means by this? What signpost is this?

p. 14 – In line 5, Sandy tells Meg to “use a happy medium”. Have we seen this phrase before in the book? When?

p. 15 – Meg is pushing her glasses again (line 4). What do you think the author is trying to tell you? Which signpost is this?

p. 15 – How long has it been since the Murry’s have heard from Mr. Murry?

p. 15 – “Just what was your father’s line of business?” Mr. Jenkins asked. Some kind of scientist, wasn’t he?”

“He is a physicist.”

What is important about the bolded verbs?

p. 15 –Mr. Jenkins tells Meg, “Then why don’t you face the facts about your father?” What facts do you think he means?

p. 16 – Charles Wallace tells Meg “She’s [Mrs. Whatsit] on our side.” What do you think he means by this?

p. 17 – “Charles loves me at any rate, she thought.” This may be important later on in the story. (Hint. Hint.)

p. 18 – “I think it would be better if people go on thinking I’m not very bright. They won’t hate me quite so much.” Why do you think people would hate Charles Wallace for being smart?

p. 18 – Meg tells Charles Wallace that Calvin is “in Regional”. Why is Regional capitalized?

p. 18 – When Meg tells Charles Wallace that Calvin is on the basketball team, Calvin responds with “Just because I’m tall.” What does his response tell you about Calvin (besides the fact that he is tall)?

p. 19 – We learn that Calvin is 14 and that he is in 11th grade. In what grade are most 14-year-olds? What does this tell you about Calvin?

p. 20 – Charles Wallace tells Calvin “She’s [Mrs. Murry] not one of us.” What does he mean?

p. 21 –“Why had there been no smoke visible from the chimney?” This is an odd fact. Watch for odd facts when they appear. There must be a reason for them. Hmmmm!

Pay attention to Mrs. Who’s quotations. They are always important.

These are 6 of the main characters:

  • Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin are all intelligent and don’t quite fit in with others.
  • Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which all have interesting names. Pay attention to details about who they are to better understand why Madeleine L’Engle named them what she did.

Identify the type of figurative language used by L’Engle.

p. 17 – “the wind made music in the branches” ______
