Daniel 10
I)Introduction
A)Daniel 7 – Like Chapter 2 vision, we see prophecy Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome. However, in this vision from the Roman Empire is seen the growth of a little horn, the apostate church, which would last till judgment day. During same Roman empire an everlasting kingdom would be established of the True church.
B)Daniel 8 – Visions of a ram and goat representing Medo-Persia and Greece are seen. In particular is mentioned the meager horn arising from a divided Grecian empire, Antiochus IV. Invited in by those part of a disobedient Israel, he reigns punishment upon Jerusalem. This was a significant occurrence signaling the time of the end of the Mosaic/Jewish Age and the beginning of the end of all things.
C)Daniel 9 – Prayer by Daniel for forgiveness of Israel. Vision of 70 weeks and beyond. The focus being on the fulfillments of the Messiah and subsequently the annihilation of the shell that brought him to the fulfillments.
II)Daniel 10- Beginning of Vision which extends through Chapter 12, taking us to the end of the end.
A)Verses 1-9– Vision Comes to Daniel
1)Verse 1 – This is during the timeframe of Cyrus.
(a)Cyrus came to power in 538 BC.
- This being the third year would be 536.
(b)Some cry conflict as Daniel 1:21 stated Daniel “continued until the first year of Cyrus.”
This is generally explained in one of two ways:
Daniel was in authority until the reign of Cyrus – Spanning Many Kings.
Daniel simply made it to the reign of the ruler of another Kingdom.
(c)“Great conflict” or “warfare”–The KJV does not have the term conflict or warfare.
- Instead the KJV says the “appointed time was long”.
This phrase “appointed time” is H6635 - It means army or large body of persons
- The term great H1419 – is a reference to a large number.
- Together, they work go give the idea of a people under conflict for a long time.
2)Verse -2-3 – Begins in First Person.
(a)Verse 1 was in Third person. It was written so as a statement of Introduction – Keil
(b)Daniel mourns – exhibited with fasting.
- Why was he mourning? Speculation – Some say over Jerusalem/Temple.
Perhaps even an extended remembrance of Passover.
Nisan 14th-21st
3)Vs. 4-6 – Hiddekel – Tigris River
(a)A Man of God appears to Daniel – Who is He? – Speculation!
- Comparison to Rev. 1:12-17
4)Vs. 7-9 – None can see the man but Daniel
(a)However, they could feel the presence.
- Consider: Acts 9:3-7
(b)Daniel falls in a deep sleep, weakened, on his face on the ground.
B)Vs. 10-17 – The Man Speaks to Daniel
1)Vs. 10-12
(a)Man of High Esteem (9:23)
(b)Set his heart on understanding
- Jas 1:5-16 - But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting: for he that doubteth is like the surge of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.
(c)Humbled himself before God
- Jas 4:10- Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
(d)“I have come in response to your Words”
- Mat 7:7 - "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
2)Vs. 13-14 – Details of the activities of one from God.
(a)This Man of God was actively involved in influencing the King of Persia – Cyrus.
- 21 days? Corresponds to the timeframe of mourning by Daniel.
- Remember, Daniel’s Words were heard from the Beginning.
- Is it possible the influencing of the King of Persia was related to Daniel’s Prayers?
- Note the influence is also expressed in vs. 13 as “kings of Persia” – Rulers.
(b)Michael – The Chief Angel – Comes to Aid Michael
- Jude 1:9, Rev. 12:7
(c)Understanding to be given regarding:
- The People of Israel in latter times.
Will this information cover the end of the Mosaic Age? Yes!
Will this information cover the Christian Dispensation to the end of all things? Yes!
3)Vs. 15-18
(a)One in the likeness of the Children of Man
- Speculation.
(b)Gives Daniel ability to speak from his muteness.
- Daniel expresses his weakness and even pain.
- He is strengthened.
4)Vs. 19-21 – “Oh man greatly loved”
(a)This entity would return to influence the King of Persia – Predicting the coming of Greece.
(b)Michael, the chief of angels, would stand with him alone.
