A Typical week in the Life of a Specialist Learning Mentor

As you support the work we do we thought we would offer you an overview of a typical week. Below is a usual week for the Children’s Specialist Learning Mentor. Life is never dull!

Monday / Morning
Ward Round - this involves meeting with medical colleagues on the wards to determine who will need teaching that day and whether they can attend the Group in the Learning Zone or require a lesson at their bedside.
Timetable Planning- the information gathered is discussed with Educational Colleagues. We decide who is going to teach each child and what according to their timetable. ( daily)
Visit the wards and pick up new referrals- involves introducing the Service and explaining the role of Education while the child is in hospital.
Liaison with main stream schools
Prepare for afternoon lesson / Afternoon
Pick up children from the ward ready for school
Learning Zone session and then
write up
Visit the Day Clinic

Tuesday / Ward Round and Timetable Planning
Travel to and from:
School meeting in Hull / Communication Hour -(planning for current children and updating Personal Education Plans)
Write up school meeting details
Wednesday / Ward Round and Timetable Planning
Teaching and engagement activities
School meeting in East Ardsley
team / Pick up children from the ward ready for school
Staff Meeting at Grafton with Full staff team
Debrief from Teachers Day- Meeting with social care
Admin work for Educational purposes
Thursday / Ward Round and Timetable Planning
Meet child and family in clinic- check how school is going- liaise with relevant professionals if required
Host visit from a Head-teacher and show around Learning Zone / Pick up children from the ward ready for school
Psycho-Social Meeting- MDT
Teaching and engagement activities
Friday / Ward Round and Timetable Planning
MacMillan Meeting with Macmillan Nurses
Liaise with schools following Macmillan Meeting
Get clinic list for following week
Notify Home teaching service about pupils next week’s requirement. / Pick up children from the ward ready for school

Other recent activities:
Plan Regional Home Teachers Event ( for June)
Prepare for Royal visit (March)
Presentation about Role at Regional Medical Education Day (April)
Prepare for holiday programme
Attend training courses for medical related issues/ reading schemes and presentation skills.
