A Treasure Box of History:

Famous People and Moments in African American history

All 5th grade students must choose a famous person, group, or event in Black History. Then students should prepare the following 5 assignments:

  1. One decorated treasure chest the size of a shoebox.
  2. A newsarticle about your topic. The article can include important events and biographical information. Your article should be 3-5 paragraphs long, and can be typed or written neatly. A picture could be attached to the article. You are required to use 2-3 resources to research your topic. Include the resources you used to research your topic with your article.
  3. A hand-writtenpoem about or inspired by your topic. The poem must be 20 lines long minimum. A poem line must contain at least 6 words to be considered a line, although you may include additional lines that are shorter. Use of Poetic Devices is highly suggested.
  4. A hand-drawn picture of the person, group, or event. This can be created using any art medium you prefer: pencil, crayon, pastels, paint, collage, etc.
  5. Artifacts that your person, group or event may have had or had been found. (Example: If you were researching Vanessa Williams you might include a sash and crown)

Put all the artifacts in your treasure chest and bring them to class. You should be

prepared to share your treasure chest with the class, and be ready to answer questions about your topic. No written speech is required, just be ready to share your contents and information informally.
