Matthew 19:3-9

Introduction: We have been studying this subject for the last two weeks. This week we want to look at the impact of repentance on this subject. of Last week we began this study by looking at the exchange between the Pharisees and Jesus. This week we will look at some definitions and also look at some applications.

I.Definitions.

A.Thayer – to change one’s mind.

B.Arndt & Gingrich – to change one’s mind.

C.Young – to have another mind.

D.Strong – to think differently or afterwards, that is, reconsider.

E.Moulton & Milligan – a complete change of attitude, spiritual and moral, towards God

F.Vine’s – to change one’s mind or purpose.

[In the New Testament the subject chiefly has reference to “repentance” from sin, and this change of mind involves both a turning from sin and a turning to God]

G.Earle – we should always remember that repentance is more than an

emotional response (feeling sorry); it also involves the intellect and will.

[Summing it up: repentance is a change of mind followed by a corresponding change of action (or life)]

II.Teachings (explanation).

A.Jesus said that repentance was important and necessary (Lk. 13:3, 5).

B.John the Baptist called for “fruits meet (worthy) for repentance”

(Matt. 3:8).

“bear fruit in keeping with repentance” (NASB).

C.“The men of Nineveh . . . repented at the preaching of Jonah”

(Matt. 12:41).

What did they do?

“They turned from their evil ways” (Jonah 3:10).

D.Acts 26:18. Is this repentance?

E.Matthew 21:28-32. Which one repented and exhibited fruit thereof?

F.Does regret/sorrow constitute repentance?

2 Corinthians 7:8-10 (NASB). [on screen]

regret/sorrow contribute to repentance.

regret/sorrow CAN exist without any change of mind or life.

III.1 Corinthians 6:9-11.

A.“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of

God?”

“shall inherit the kingdom of God”

(1 Cor. 6:11) “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

“such were some of you” – repentance

“washed” – baptized

“sanctified” – removed from those sins

“justified” – declared not guilty

Conclusion: Use Ephesians 5:25-27 in the invitation.
