Team Handball

Team handball was invented in Europe around the 1890’s. Most describe the sport as a cross between basketball, hockey, soccer, and water polo.

The objective of the game is to get the ball into the goal. Because a player cannot hold the ball for more than 5 seconds, nor take more than three steps while holding the ball, passing advances the ball. The ball can also be advanced by dribbling the ball (as in basketball).

A team is made up of 7 players, 6 court players and 1 goalkeeper.

Active players – can hold the ball for 5 seconds, dribble, and take up to 3 steps both before & after dribbling.

Start the game (and each succeeding quarter) with a jump ball. All players need to be on their half of the court.

Scoring – each goal is worth 1 point. Play does not stop on a score. The goalkeeper immediately takes the ball out of the net and play begins.

Penalty Throw – performed from the Fifteen Foot Line (freethrow line) after a player is fouled while attempting to score. The penalty throw can only be defended by the goalkeeper.

Free Throw – (basketball 3pt arch). This is the line that the offensive team needs to throw from to score. At least one foot needs to be behind this line when attempting to score. This line also marks where an attacking team resumes play after being fouled outside this area. A Free Throw is awarded on all fouls (except shooting fouls).

Corner Throw – performed by the offense on the offenses end after the ball travels past the backline and is last touched by the defense or goalkeeper.

Goal Box – (the basketball freethrow lane) can only be occupied by the goalkeeper. No one except the goalie is allowed to stand in the goal area.

Any ball knocked out of bounds is awarded to the opposing team who did not touch it last. The ball is inbounded at the spot it went out.
