Grading Policy

A student’s GPA in class is the culmination of assessments as stated below:

Homework – 15% Labs – 15% Quizzes – 20% BOP – 10%

Tests/Projects/Quarterlies – 40%

HOMEWORK (15%): Homework will be assigned most evenings. Homework will most usually be:

  1. Regents-style questions to support a reading assignment from the text.
  2. Reference Tables review questions.
  3. Literacy-based questions designed to allow students to use and apply vocabulary essential to the course.
  4. Essential diagrams in your class journal to reflect a concept reviewed in class.
  5. Studying “tech-notes” in preparation for a quiz or test.

LABS (15%): A laboratory assignment will most usually be given during the lab period class. Occasionally, lab assignments unfinished in class may be completed as homework or during the following lab class. Each lab assignment will review the concepts and/or skills reviewed in the Earth Science class.

QUIZZES (20%): Quizzes will usually be given weekly and will reflect concepts and skills reviewed in the Earth Science class. The format of quizzes will reflect questions that mirror those of the Regents examination.

BOP (10%): BOP (Beginning of Period) is a daily assessment designed to have studied reflect on concepts approached in past classes and allow the student to be mentally prepared for the current lesson. Each question assigned per day will be answered on a BOP sheet. BOP sheets will be collected and graded at the week’s end.

TESTS/PROJECTS/QUARTERLIES (40%): Tests will be assigned at the end of each topic. Several tests will be assigned per quarter. The format of tests will reflect questions that mirror those of the Regents examination.

One or more projects will be assigned per quarter. Projects are designed to allow teacher/student to further explore concepts approached in class. Often, students will be allowed to work on projects in their lab class.

A quarterly is a test that is assigned at the end of the quarter that reflects concepts approached in class throughout that quarter. The format of a quarterly will reflect questions that mirror those of the Regents examination.
