A Step By Step Guide to the Financial Awards Process

  1. Check the DSA, Career Info Bulletin Board across from the Career Center, Notices posted on the Career Center door, and Career Center News section at for announcements, updates, changes etc.
  1. Attend the General ScholarshipMeeting (Process Overview)and other Scholarship Meetings as needed, for help in completing your application. These will be offered November through December during lunch and in Flex. You may book an appointment with your counsellor or the Career Advisor for further assistance after you have been to at least 2 scholarship meetings.
  1. Visit the school website and look in the Awards / Scholarships / Bursaries section on the left menu bar.Read the Financial Awards page and look at the Website Links. These are resources to help you search for scholarships not listed on the school website.
  1. Check out what awardstheUniversity orCollege you are planning to attendoffers first year students. This info will be on the institution’s website.
  1. Read through theGetting Started page and look at the Downloadable Files.
  1. Search for scholarships by opening the Internal and External Scholarship sub-menus and checking the 4 scholarship lists found there under Downloadable Files: 1. Internal Scholarships Bursary List Details, 2. External Specific–School Mails List, 3. External–Student Mails–List,4. External Standard List.Note the criteria for each award advertised. It is suggested you copy or print information about the scholarships you are interested in for future reference.
  1. Use the PDFChecklist Internal Scholarships Bursaries and the PDF External Checklist foundunder Downloadable Files to indicate the scholarships you are applying for. These will be handed in as part of your application package.
  1. Complete a Reference Resume. This is a resume for your References so that they know about all the things you’re involved in. This not part of your application.
  1. Identify who your References will be in school (teacher, counselor, administrator, coach) or out of school (employer, pastor, coach). You should have at least 2 and preferably 3. Provide them with a reference resume. Do this EARLY!
  1. To apply for Internal Scholarships and External Standard Scholarships, use the 2018 SD33 Scholarship Application Form found under Downloadable Files.
  1. External Specific Scholarships each have their own form that you print and write on by hand. These are found on the website in the External Specific Application PDF Forms tab. Some have specific document requirements so read each carefully. Some have old dates. They are still valid.
  1. Begin your 2018 SD33 Scholarship Application Form which lists:
  • Personal Info and Post-Secondary Plans
  • Affiliations/Special Circumstances: mention any notablefinancial difficulty or other adversity in your life that deserves consideration, as well as specific family affiliations related to award criteria here.
  • Community Based Activities: include what you have done in Grade 10-12 (Paid Jobs, Volunteer Work, Tutoring)
  • School Based Activities: include what you have done from Grade 10-12 (Leadership, Sports Teams, Musical Theatre, Drama, WEX, Clubs)
  • Awards and Citations you have received in Grade 10-12.
  1. Write your Career Statement:in a paragraph of 3 to 4 good sentences, state what your educational goals are (ie: where will you apply/attend, in what program, for what degree(s) etc.). You may use several paragraphs to flesh out your statement if you wish. There are examples under Downloadable Files.
  1. Create a Financial Budget found under Downloadable Files (budget not required for Internal Scholarship applications).
  1. Email your counselor if you need help getting your Transcript (transcript not required for Internal Scholarship applications).
  1. Assemble the Internal package: following the steps outlined in the Internal Scholarships tab on the school website.Be sure to hand your application(s) in by the due date.
  1. Assemble the External packages: follow the steps outlined in the External Scholarships tab on the school website. Be careful to use the right application form for each External Award and make sure they are handed in or mailed by their specific due dates, and as per specific instructions.
  1. Scholarship winners, follow instructions on the Additional Information page.
  1. Students who win External Scholarships not listed on the school website, fill out the External Awards Not in Scholarship Booklet form under Downloadable Files and return to the Career Center. These awards will then be announced at the SSS Awards Evening along with all other awards.
