‘Let’s build it!’ 2015-16 questionnaire responses (31 replies)

Strengths of the school this year:
  • The sense of school community and spirit has improved. Enthusiasm, hard work and commitment of all staff. The teaching team is just that - a team. Staff know all the children and are kind and approachable. Morale across the school is much improved. Very supportive staff
  • More upbeat and happy children. You encourage the children’s’ confidence. Older children look after the younger ones well. The children know each other well.
  • Good progression of learning. Children are more engaged and know what they are learning. Individual recognition of children’s achievements
  • Like special topic days. A lot more musical experiences for the children out of school/ classroom. Super extra-curricular activities and trips out that help with learning. Great Sports Day and swimming lessons
  • Clear and consistent behaviour rewards and sanctions. Children are positive about the reward system. The prizes for going beyond expectations are such an incentive!
  • Assemblies and Church Services are calmer but also upbeat, so much more energy
  • Strong, approachable and proactive leadership – also supporting at outside school events. Clear leadership and path forward.
  • Visible presence of SLT at the beginning and end of days.Kept on top of parking issues for the whole year
  • A happy, vibrant Headteacher who participates in the children’s activities and who has made a huge positive impact and settled in well.
  • Parent and Carer Forum maintains a dialogue between home and school. Parents’ views are listened to. Sessions and workshops run for parents to help them support the children’s learning
  • Good communication between staff/ parents via texts, newsletters, notes
  • Good monitoring, observations, marking and data systems. Expectations of staff and children. Good learning environment and use of outdoor learning. Good theme of ‘Let’s build it!’ and consistency of Success Criteria challenges

Areas for the school to develop next year:
  • More feedback about weekly Maths tests needed. Concentrate on one times table for children to focus on a week.
  • More Subject Focus Days and class trips
  • Conflicting messages at lunchtime and break about running/ football
  • Develop the reward system so that consistently good children are recognised. Give positive feedback linked to what the children have achieved in their work to boost their self-esteem. Give time to train children in peer assessment
  • Ensure we continue to really challenge higher attaining children
  • Extra support for children that need it – quality interventions. Could this be after-school boosters?
  • More range of playground equipment (basketballs, climbing frame, swing)
  • Achievement and progress (especially SPAG). Give time to embed any new structures (e.g. spellings) to ensure it is manageable and effective
  • Teacher subject knowledge enhanced by observing each other
  • Encourage use of inhalers for asthma before PE
  • More sharing assemblies throughout the year
  • Reinstate after-school book club – children really enjoyed it
  • Swimming pool – heating, roof, perhaps smaller groups for only half an hour?
  • Use the pond and gardens more
  • More notice given of events and INSET days. Make sure spelling and grammar is correct in these.
  • Don’t timetable non-core subjects for the morning
  • Stronger stance on repeatedly rude/ disrespectful children
  • More time for TAs and their increasing workload
  • More charity events for local causes
  • Enforce correct school uniform
  • Ensure parent consultations are meaningful and productive

  • I’ve really enjoyed school this year. It’s been really positive. I have loved being at Guestling – it’s an uplifting place to be
  • Her year in Reception has exceeded our expectations – we are very impressed!
  • Any queries or concerns have been addressed quickly fairly and discreetly by SLT
  • Great staff support
  • This year has been the best so far, impressive range of after-school activities and school seems fun!
  • Communication between staff/ leaders/ parents has much improved
  • Superstar Student cards sent home are a nice personal touch and give the children a boost
  • Enjoy Community Gardening afternoons

  • Ensure that not too much creative-style homework is asked for at one time. Also praise children that have worked completely independently
  • Stability needed for Year 3 class as they continue through the school
  • Ensure homework set helps the children to learn, not just be tested
  • Could we run a Holiday Club again in the future?
  • Consider using teachers that have left school and then re-employing them carefully to ensure children don’t feel left out
  • Communicate early with parents if we suspect children need support (dyslexia)
  • Ensure feedback/ sharing boxes are checked and acted on regularly
