BALDWIN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL

Teacher Information and Requirements

Baldwin County Board of Education Policies and Procedures

ANNOUNCEMENTS. If a teacher would like to make a morning announcement, he or she should either complete an announcement form and place in the tray at the front desk or e-mail the announcement to an administrator at least 24 hours prior to the announcement. No announcements will be made without obtaining administrative approval. No announcements will be made during class unless first approved by an administrator. Afternoon announcements will be made for emergency situations only.

ATTENDANCE. Attendance should be posted after tardy bell rings (7:47). Students who arrive after 7:47must report to the main office and check in. Do not allow a student in class after 7:47 without a check-in slip from the office. Attendance for first, second, third, and fourth blocks should be posted within 10 minutes of the beginning of each class.Students who are in in-school suspension (ISS) or on a field trip/athletic competition should not be marked absent.

  • Absentee Slips. When a student returns to school from an absence, he/she has three days to bring an excuse to his/her homeroom/1st block teacher. When the student brings the excuse or if the student has not brought an excuse by thethird day, the teacher should complete the Absentee Slip located in the forms section of the teacher handbook (or on the website). If the student brought an excuse, the teacher should file the excuse, then place in Early Warning Folder for Ms. Easley. The teacher should give the completed absentee slip to the student who will collect signatures from his/her other teachers. The fourth block teacher will file the attendance slip with the teachers’ signatures and then place in Early Warning Folder for Ms. Easley. Teachers should use the information on the slip to determine whether or not students will be able to make up assignments missed due to the absence.
  • Early Warning Folder. Every teacher who has a 1st block will maintain an Early Warning Folder, which contains attendance information about his or her students. Ms. Easley will use this information to enroll students inthe Early Warning Truancy Prevention Program. Every Friday, Ms. Easley will place the Early Warning Folder in the teacher’s box. The teachers will check the attendance listed in the folder against their records. If a student who was absent brought in an excuse, the teacher will write either “doctor’s excuse” or “parent note” next to the absence. If the student did not bring an excuse, the teacher will write, “unexcused” next to the absence. The teacher will follow the same process for tardies. Folders should be returned to Ms. Easley by 11:00 a.m. the following Monday.

SKIPPING. If a student is marked present to 1ST blockand is marked absent to second, third, or fourth blocks, the absences will automatically be changed to SKIPPING (@@@) in the computer, unless the student checked out through the office.

If a student is legitimately skipping class, the teacher should write the student up using a discipline referraland e-mail it to the appropriate administrator.

If a student is marked “missing” in error (e.g. on a field trip or in ISS), the teacher should email Ms. Easleyimmediately and ask thatthe student be marked present.

If you mark a student “missing” and that student comes to class late, please call Ms. Easley in the front office. She will mark the student as an unexcused or excused tardy.

BULLETIN BOARDS. Bulletin boards are assigned to clubs and other groups to display important information for our students. They should be maintained regularly with up-to-date information.

CAFETERIA. The cafeteria is frequently used during and after school for meetings or activities. All requests to use the cafeteria should be directed to Mr. Smith.

CANTEEN. Snacks will not be sold to students during class. Students are not permitted to take snacks or drinks to class.

CLASSROOMS. Classrooms should be decorated appropriately to enhance the learning environment. They should be kept neat and clean. Students are not permitted to bring food into classrooms;bottled water/drinks purchased from the school canteen/vending machines are permitted. Teachers should refrain from eating in their classroom while students are in the room. At the end of each day, please bag your trash and take to one of the receptacles in the hallways.Comments or concerns regarding classroom cleanliness or maintenanceshould be directed to Mr. Brown. Maintenance requests should be made by contacting Robert Brown.

CLASSROOM WINDOWS. Do not completely cover the windows of your classroom. Allow space for someone to see in the classroom in case of an emergency.

CONFERENCES. No conferences will be scheduled through the main office. If a parent would like to schedule a conference with a teacher, the parent should leave a message on voice mail or e-mail the teacher. It will be the teacher’s responsibility to schedule the conference by returning the call. The teacher should maintain documentation of parent/teacher conferences. A Parent Contacts - Classroom Log and a Teacher/Student/Parent Conference form is located in the forms section of the teacher handbook and on the forms drive on the network. These forms may be used for documentation.

DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS. See counselors for information regarding diploma requirements, promotion, and/or credits for graduation.

DISCIPLINE. The discipline of a school is the responsibility of every teacher and administrator. If you see a student violating a rule, stop the student and handle the situation in an appropriate manner. It is suggested that teachers follow the Baldwin County High School Classroom Rules & Discipline Plan located in the forms section of the teacher handbook. Do not lower a student’s test grade, quiz score, or class grade as a disciplinary measure. If the student continues to behave inappropriately, the teacher should complete a discipline referral and give it the appropriate administrator: Mr. Smith (12th ), Mr. Cox (11thgrade), Mrs. Baker (10th grade), and Mr. Wigstrom (9th grade). Discipline referrals may be brought to the administrative offices during the teacher’s planning period, break, after school, or sent by e-mail to the administrator. Do not send a student out of your classroom to go to the office or to stand in the hallway. If a severe disruption or emergency occurs, the teacher should immediately call the office. An administrator will come to your classroom to remove the student, and the teacher should e-mail a referral to the administrator as soon as possible. After the administrator addresses the discipline referral with a student, a copy of the referral with an explanation of the action taken will be placed in the teacher's box or via e-mail. If the reporting teacher wishes to discuss the punishment or in some way misunderstands the action taken, he or she should see the administrator during his or her planning period.
