A.S.S.U.R.E. MODEL - Lesson Plan for WebQuest

Rationale for WebQuest: The purpose of this Webquest is to do a basic review and/or introduction of geometric shapes before students start a unit on Geometry.

Standard:

5.G.4. Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.

A

Audience:

General characteristics:

24 students total (10 males, 14 females)

11-13 years old

11 Caucasian students, 11 African-American students, and 2 Hispanic students

Exceptionalities:

4 gifted students

Specific characteristics (content related): The students have not yet learned much about geometric shapes. This lesson will introduce them to the basic 2-D and 3-D shapes.
S
State Learning Objective(s) for the lesson in ABCD format:

7th grade math students will be able to recognize basic 2-D and 3-D shapes and be able to determine basic characteristics using a jot chart eight out of ten times.

The WebQuest will focus on the cognitive aspects of students’ understanding.

S
Select Materials:
Jot Chart Poster

Index card with characteristics printed on them

Jot Chart handouts (one per student)

2-Dand 3-D Shape Manipulatives (real and virtual) - (one set per group)

1 computer for each group with internet access
Classroom computer with attached overhead for class WebQuest viewing
Jeopardy Powerpoint
U
Utilize Materials:

Manipulatives will be used for students to determine simple characteristics of each shape. They will also complete an open sort based on what shapes they think are comparable. Once students have made these beginning assumptions, they will discover more details about each shape using and fill out a Jot Chart guide for the given shapes. Discussion will then take place to fill in the Jot Chart poster to collaborate on shape properties.

The instructional method strategies that will be used:
Cooperative Learning
Discussion/Questioning
Graphic Organizer
R

Require Student Interaction:

Student will be grouped into six groups of four. The four gifted students will be split up so that they can act as a resource for struggling students. All students will be engaged using the manipulative and Jot Chart.

Schedule: Day 1_Properties and Characteristics, Jot Chart, WebQuest___
Day 2 (if needed)__National Library of Virtual Manipulatives Two-Dimensioanl Shape Creation Activity and National Library of Virtual Manipulatives Three-Dimensional Shape Creation Activity_
E
Evaluation:

Students will receive:

Points…….if complete…..This amount correctly
5 points...... 8 out of 10

3 points...... >6 out of 10
1 point...... <6 out of 10

Reflections and Follow-up Activities (Only if needed and have remaining time)

Since this lesson is the introduction and review of basic two-dimensional shapes, the teacher will be provided with activites that can be completed with two-dimensional shapes. Also, a provided unit can be taught for a couple of weeks. A Jeopardy game (below) can be used at the end of a unit to review two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes.
