A RESOLUTION honoring the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

WHEREAS, on January 15, 2008, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, celebrated its 100th anniversary and began its movement toward a second centennial of service for the oldest Greek letter organization established by African American college-trained women; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority continues as a service-oriented organization with over 200,000 undergraduate and alumnae members from all over the world who represent a diverse constituency of women from educators to heads of state, politicians, lawyers, medical professionals, media personalities, and decision-makers of major corporations; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has responded to the world's increasing complexity, and continues to empower communities through exemplary service initiatives and progressive activities such as economic education, creating exposure and opportunities for women entrepreneurs, adopting and assisting families, and improving the mental and physical health of local communities; and

WHEREAS, in an effort to increase reading and writing skills, the Young Authors program was started by Alpha Kappa Alpha and offered young K-3 children the opportunity to write and submit stories for a local and regional competition and have their stories included as part of a published anthology titled "The Spirit Within: Voices of Young Authors"; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha's Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF) has a mission to promote lifelong learning, providing scholarships, fellowships, and community assistance awards in communities across the United States and internationally; and

WHEREAS, the service and accomplishments of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated are too numerous to name, although recent accomplishments include: a jobs partnership with President Barack Obama, and an organized appeal to support relief efforts in Haiti; and

WHEREAS, this illustrious group of women has taken to heart the words of Booker T. Washington, "If you want to lift yourself up, lift someone else up," and has advocated and embraced volunteerism, a long trademark of the sorority; and

WHEREAS, Kentucky's 15 chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, in cities and universities across the Commonwealth include Beta Gamma Omega, Beta Omega Omega, Beta Rho Omega, Beta Upsilon Omega, Eta Omega, Omicron Sigma Omega, Pi Lambda Omega, Beta Epsilon, Beta Zeta, Epsilon Zeta, Eta Rho, Iota Sigma, Sigma Eta, Zeta Nu, and Zeta Zeta, and each exemplifies the commitment to community service of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. This Honorable Body does hereby express its heartfelt appreciation to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for its service to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Beta Gamma Omega Chapter, P.O. Box 11405, Lexington, Kentucky 40575.
