A RESOLUTION honoring Bardstown Mayor William Sheckles.

WHEREAS, Mayor William Sheckles was born and raised in Bardstown, Kentucky. Graduating from Bardstown High School, he attended Western Kentucky University and was a four-year letterman on the university's baseball team. In 1976, he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration, and he returned to Bardstown and the community he so loved; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Sheckles has been the sales leader at Conway-Heaton Automotive for the past 24 years. He spent 12 years as a Bardstown City Councilman, chairing the Safety and Housing Committees. He has been a tireless advocate for his community and has served on many local boards and councils, including the Utilities Committee and the Joint City-County Recreation Board; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Sheckles was appointed Executive Board Member of the Kentucky League of Cities, and is also President of the Kentucky Black Caucus of Local Officials. Aside from those preeminent titles, he is a board member of the Nelson County Democratic Executive Committee; President of Buttermilk Days Foundation, Inc.; a board member of the Bardstown Foundation of Excellence in Public; a trustee of the First Baptist Church of Bardstown; a member of the Springhaven Domestic Violence Shelter Advisory Board; and a member of the Bardstown Kiwanis Club; and

WHEREAS, in November of 2010, Mayor Sheckles was elected as the first African American mayor of Bardstown. Using his deep knowledge of the city as both a citizen and a businessman, he has begun to appreciate the inner workings of local government, and to face the challenging issues of his wonderful hometown; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Sheckles, along with his loving wife, Linda, and his children, Megan and Wesley, deserve the recognition of this Honorable Body. The best wishes of this Body, and the hopes and prayers of the Commonwealth are with Mayor Sheckles as he continues his tenure as mayor and takes Bardstown into the 21st century;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate commends the work of Mayor William Sheckles as a businessman, an elected official, and as an advocate of his community, and wishes him success in all his future endeavors.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Mayor William Sheckles.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Gerald Neal for delivery.
