A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor of the Louisville Zoo upon receiving the Significant Achievement in Education Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for the School at the Zoo Program.

WHEREAS, the Louisville Zoo was developed in 1969, and for more than four decades it has been a place of inspiration, learning, and recreation for people across this Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, in November 2013, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums named Louisville Zoo's School at the Zoo Program the winner of its Significant Achievement in Education Award. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in education program design and judges programs on their ability to promote conservation knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors; show innovation; and measure success; and

WHEREAS, the School at the Zoo Program was designed in 1998 and has maintained the mission of engaging the young people of Louisville and this Commonwealth in science learning. School at the Zoo is a hands-on approach that fosters science-, technology-, engineering-, and mathematics-based learning by combining talks by zoo educators and zookeepers with unique animal interactions, inquiry-based activities, and animal enrichment demonstrations during a week-long class held at the zoo; and

WHEREAS, the Louisville Zoo functions as a "living classroom" for almost 1,500 elementary and middle school students annually who participate in the School at the Zoo Program. The program engages students and in so doing helps improve the region's test scores and makes science literacy a reality; and

WHEREAS, this honorable body rightfully honors the Louisville Zoo upon receiving the Significant Achievement in Education Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for the School at the Zoo Program, commends all those who give of their time and talent to make School at the Zoo a success, and grants best wishes to everyone associated with the Louisville Zoo as they continue to provide a positive learning environment for the youth of this Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate hereby honors the Louisville Zoo upon receiving the Significant Achievement in Education Award for the School at the Zoo Program and applauds the work all those associated with the Louisville Zoo accomplish to help enrich the lives and minds of all the young people who visit the zoo each day.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of the Louisville Zoo.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to John Walczak, Louisville Zoo Director, 1100 Trevilian Way, Louisville, Kentucky 40213-1559.
