A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor of Stewart Home School.

WHEREAS, Dr. John Quincy Adams Stewart founded Stewart Home School on the campus of the old Kentucky Military Institute in Franklin County, Kentucky, in 1893; and

WHEREAS, Stewart Home School was founded as a result of Dr. John Q. Stewart's pioneering understanding that exceptional education and training could be provided for intellectually disabled individuals of all ages in a caring and supportive environment through a privately-run organization with the direct guidance and collaboration of the families and students who choose to pursue such an opportunity; and

WHEREAS, Stewart Home School has been under the direction of the Stewart family for five generations, with Dr. John P. Stewart currently leading the school in fulfilling its founding mission of providing private education to intellectually disabled individuals of all ages while operating solely on private funds provided by the student's families, thus never utilizing local, state, or federal moneys; and

WHEREAS, the laws of the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Kentucky require that intellectually disabled individuals are afforded a full range of choices, including, but not limited to, the freedom to seek and obtain the same educational opportunities available to all Americans; and

WHEREAS, the vision, wisdom, dedication and faith of the Stewart family has provided thousands of intellectually disabled individuals of all ages the freedom to attend a private boarding school where they can enjoy all the benefits and advantages of a private education; and

WHEREAS, Stewart Home School is a sustaining member of the National Association of Private Special Education Centers and is regarded by national leaders, distinguished educators, and the families and students it serves as a jewel of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, this year, Stewart Home School will open another education building which will house nine classrooms, including additional computer, science, art, and academic laboratories, thus adding to the school's existing classrooms; and

WHEREAS, in 2003, the student body, numbering over 400 students and over 150 staff, is celebrating 110 years of choice learning, happiness, and success;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. Stewart Home School is recognized as worthy of the commendation, autonomy, and respect of the Commonwealth of Kentucky for its unsurpassed record of accomplishment and service to the intellectually disabled, and is hereby deemed worthy of preservation and approval in perpetuity.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Stewart Home School.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Lindy Casebier for presentation to Stewart Home School.
