A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor and loving memory of William L. Sullivan.

WHEREAS, William L. Sullivan was a native son of the Commonwealth, born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, on November 1, 1921, the son of the late Anne Litsey and Charles Blount Sullivan; and

WHEREAS, William L. Sullivan proudly served this nation as a fighter pilot for the United States Army. A former World Speed Racing Champion in France, he was an esteemed graduate of Centre College and the University of Kentucky College of Law. In 1954, he was elected to the Kentucky State Senate, and in 1956 he became Majority Floor Leader. After a single term he left the Senate, but he returned in 1966 to admirably serve four more terms. During his second stint as a member of this august body, Senator Sullivan was elected Senate President Pro Tem, and on more than 60 occasions he functioned as acting Governor of this Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, William L. Sullivan departed this earthly life on September 11, 2013. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Dorsey Sullivan; his son, John Charles Sullivan; and his brother, Charles Blount Sullivan III. He is survived by his son, William L. Sullivan, Jr.; his sister, Lois Thomas; his brother, John Sullivan; his grandsons, Charles Joshua Sullivan and William Zachary Sullivan and his wife, Amber; his daughter-in-law, Dana Sullivan; his granddaughters, Lillian Elizabeth Sullivan and Izabella Anne Sullivan; several nieces and nephews; and an entire Commonwealth who remain appreciative of the good work he accomplished in his almost two decades of public service;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

âSection 1. The Senate expresses its most profound sense of sorrow and extends its sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and community of William L. Sullivan.

âSection 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor and loving memory of William L. Sullivan.

âSection 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Dorsey Ridley for delivery to the family.
