A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of Dawson Orman.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Dawson Orman, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, Dawson Orman was born on October 5, 1927, a native of Springfield, Tennessee, and longtime resident of Louisville, Kentucky, and he traversed these earthly bounds on April 27, 1997; and

WHEREAS, Dawson Orman was the loving son of the late Walter and Margaret Orman; he was the devoted husband of Dorothy Orman; he was the loving father of four sons, Dee, David, Dan and Doug Orman, and two daughters, Donna McCabe and Debbie Sorrels; and he was the proud grandfather of eleven grandchildren, Shannon Dick, Kevin McCabe, Kelly McCabe, Gabriel Orman, Logan Orman, Molly Orman, Brandon Sorrels, Clayton Orman, Casey Orman, Kelsie Orman and Madison Orman; and

WHEREAS, Dawson Orman graduated from Louisville Male High School in 1945; he completed undergraduate work at the University of Louisville and graduate work at the University of Kentucky; and his advanced graduate studies included work from the University of Louisville and Indiana University; and

WHEREAS, Dawson Orman worked in education for more than thirty years, spending nine years as principal of the only school in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, which housed kindergarten through high school; and he served twenty-two years in the Jefferson County Public Schools system where he was a teacher, football coach, assistant principal, and principal of several district schools, including Shawnee Junior High School, Highland Junior High School, and Atherton High School; and

WHEREAS, Dawson Orman also held the positions of assistant superintendent and deputy superintendent of the Jefferson County Public Schools; he retired from his deputy superintendent position in 1984, and he assumed the role of executive director of the Kentucky Association of Secondary School Principals from 1984 to 1997; and while many people believed they were the beneficiaries of his involvement in enhancing the leadership of Kentucky's principals, he believed that his participation in their educational lives allowed him to grow and stay current with the profession to which he was so committed; and

WHEREAS, Dawson Orman committed his life to serving others, and he brought light and inspiration to all the lives he touched; he was held in high esteem by the Jefferson County community, winning the trust and admiration of Louisvillians, west and east, and black and white; he demonstrated an unwavering dedication to the children of Jefferson County, and he served as an inspiration to his peers through his endless efforts, tireless commitment to the causes and beliefs he steadfastly supported, and astute leadership in the spearheading of meaningful projects for the betterment of education and children; and

WHEREAS, because of his contributions to the Jefferson County Public Schools through the years, and his passion for children and their education, the Dawson Orman Education Center was named in his honor on October 5, 1999; and in recognition of his contributions to the outstanding high school athletic tradition of this fine Commonwealth, playing as a multi-sport star at Male High School, serving as coach and administrator for the Mt. Sterling School system, and making tremendous contributions to the Jefferson County School system, Dawson Orman was inducted into the Dawahare's/Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame on March 14, 2000; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Dawson Orman has left a void that will be difficult to fill, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. This honorable body does hereby express its utter sense of bereavement upon the passing of Dawson Orman, and extends to his family and many friends its most profound and deepest sympathy.

Section 2. The passion, dedication, intelligence and social consciousness Dawson Orman brought to this Commonwealth will never be forgotten, and his influence will continue.

Section 3. When the House of Representatives adjourns, it does so in loving memory and honor of Dawson Orman.

Section 4. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Dorothy Orman, 3624 Windward Way, Louisville, Kentucky 40220.
