A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in honor and loving memory of Dorothy Calvin Baker.

WHEREAS, a Kentucky native, Dorothy Calvin Baker was born April 28, 1921, to the late James D. and Esther Ruth (Sink) Carrier; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Calvin Baker was a 1939 graduate of Bryan Station High School in Lexington, Kentucky where she received all-state chorus honors; and

WHEREAS, often referred to as a "trailblazer for women," Dorothy Calvin Baker enlisted in the United States Navy at the beginning of World War II, was stationed at Pearl Harbor, and wore her status of veteran proudly; and

WHEREAS, during the early nineteen fifties, Dorothy Calvin Baker and her husband James K. Baker moved to Owensboro, Kentucky where she cared for her home and family; she took an active role in the community as she volunteered with Brownie and Girl Scout troops at Masonville Grade School, was active in homemakers, and was the education secretary at First Baptist Church in Owensboro, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Calvin Baker milked cows, gathered eggs, and churned butter as she raised cows, goats, lambs, rabbits, and chickens on their small farm; she was a woman of many talents as she made and ironed the dresses her daughters wore; she spent hours quilting, knitting, and crocheting afghans; and she planted a garden and canned the vegetables from the garden; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Calvin Baker returned to Lexington, Kentucky with her husband and family in the early nineteen sixties and she was hired by Dr. Franklin Owens to be his secretary at Calvary Baptist Church; after a number of years, she worked for the Veterans Hospital until her retirement; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Calvin Baker enjoyed life and cherished her friendships in the Daisy Sunday School Class at Calvary Baptist Church; she loved flowers, magnolia trees, singing, and at the time of her passing, playing with her great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Calvin Baker celebrated almost 60 years of marriage to James K. Baker before his death; she was the loving mother of Kentucky State Representative Ruth Ann (John II) Palumbo, Susan Lynn Williams, and Lindsay Thomas (Dana) Baker II; she was the caring grandmother of Joseph Edward (Jennifer) Palumbo, James Thomas Palumbo, Stephen Baker (Jamie) Palumbo, Lindsay Thomas Baker III, Logan Keith (Kelly) Baker, 2nd Lieutenant Andrew James Baker, Dorothy Lynn Williams, and Michael Christopher Williams; the doting great-grandmother of Anna Louise Palumbo, John Anthony Palumbo IV, Sanina Lynette Palumbo, Stephen Baker Palumbo II, Lucy Grace Baker, Roy Lee Young, James Truman Young, Alexia Lynn Williams, Reiden Alan Williams, and Elijah Christopher Williams; and

WHEREAS, Dorothy Calvin Baker departed this earthly life on February 10, 2013, at the age of 91 to join her husband, her brother Carl Edward Carrier, and grandson John Anthony Palumbo III, all of whom proceeded her in death;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

âSection 1. The House of Representatives expresses its most profound sense of sorrow and proffers its sincerest condolences to Representative Ruth Ann Palumbo and her family at the passing of her mother, Dorothy Calvin Baker.

âSection 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in honor and loving memory of Dorothy Calvin Baker.

âSection 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the office of Representative Ruth Ann Palumbo.
