LIBR 595 Practicum Application Form

The LIBR 595 Practicum is a non-credit optionalcoursein the MLIS and DualMAS/MLISprograms.

Structure & Purpose

You are placed in an approved library or organization of your choice for 2 weeks full-time (10 working days) under the supervision of a librarian. The purpose is to provide you with a broad understanding of how a library or information centre is managed. The emphasis is learning through observation with some hands-on work in various departments within the organization.

Pre-requisite

Students may do the practicum followingcompletion of theMLIS Core(LIBR 500, 501, 502, 503). It is recommended students do the practicum at the end of the second term of study.

When do I do my practicum?

Practicums take place at the end of term(after classes end) inApril or in December, and less commonly at the end of either of the two terms insummer.

Where can I do my practicum?

There is no geographic restriction on where you go to do your practicum. Students have been placed all over Canada, the US, United Kingdom, and one inAfrica! Keep in mind that you are responsible for transportation and accommodation costs.

How are practicums arranged?

The School makes the formal arrangements for the practicum.Please do not make arrangements for a placement yourself.Contacting organizations to confirm contact information is fine however. We will make every effort to place you in the first organization of your choice.

Written requirement

A 500-word report is required upon completion of the practicum.

How do I apply?

Fill out the Practicum Preferences form(page 2) electronically. You will need MS Word to complete the form. E-mail the completed form AND your current résumé that includes educational history and any library or related work experienceas Word attachments to the Student Services Coordinator .

Deadline

Applications are due at least 12 weeks before your practicum starts.
