ETHOS STATEMENT AND VALUES

Recognizing its historic foundation, this Church school will preserve and develop its religious character in accordance with the principles of the Church of England and in partnership with the Churches at parish and diocesan level.

The school aims to serve its community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. It encourages an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith, and promotes Christian values through the experiences it offers its pupils.

The ethos of our school states the beliefs held about the nature of our teaching and learning. It suggests the atmosphere desired to enable the application of this philosophy. Our school as a Church School provides the foundation for developing an ethos promoting Christian values, morals and spirituality. The Christian elements form an integral part of the way teachers teach and children learn so that everyone in our school can foster a love of God in all they do.

Briefly, it promotes the following:

Enthusiasm is an essential characteristic of the school.

Each child is a unique individual with particular needs

The physical, ethical, emotional, spiritual, social and conceptual needs of a child are interrelated and all should be met.

Respect for oneself, for others and their property is essential for full development.

There should be enjoyment, interest, relevance and worthiness to promote motivation in learning.

Each adult in school will have the opportunity to participate as fully as possible.

Staff have a collective responsibility for the overall development of the school and the child.

All staff have the opportunity to participate in the decision making and regard will be given to their professional autonomy.

MISSION STATEMENT

Our school is a Church of England Voluntary Aided School which gives priority to developing in its pupils a real understanding of Christianity as a living faith.

Christian values and attitudes are built into the school’s ethos and teaching and are reflected in all areas of the curriculum.

We seek to help the children achieve their full potential, by encouraging a love of learning, the development of self-esteem, and confidence.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Introduction

Thank you for taking the time to find out about Kirkburton First School. Making the decision about whichschool is the right school for your child can be a difficult one but we hope that this prospectuswill help you make that decision.

The following information will help you to understand the organisation of our school and also enable you to settle your child into the routine of the school as smoothly as possible.

We are of the firm opinion that the education of your child is very much a joint partnership between you as parents, your child and us as teachers and so should any query or problem arise, I would like you to feel free to visit the school to discuss it. Obviously, it would be appreciated if visits were not made during those times when teachers are involved with their classes.

A Brief Description and History of the School

The school was opened in 1925 and has served Kirkburton village and the community up to the present day. It is a small stonebuilt school set in spacious grounds, including a field and wooded areas.

The school has 6 classes and a large hall. In 2000 the school was extended in order to create an additional classroom for our Reception Class. Over the last few years there have been several building projects to improve the internal layout of the school. The main corridor houses the original stone, which marks the first school, erected in Kirkburton in the 18th Century.

KIRKBURTON CE (VA) FIRST SCHOOL

ADMISSIONS POLICY

The Governing Body of Kirkburton CE (VA) Primary School is the admissions authority for the school, not the Local Authority.

Children start school:

Date of 5th Birthday (inclusive) Time of Admission

1st September – 29th February (Full-time) Autumn (September)

1st March – 31st August (Full-time) Autumn (September) or

(Full-time) Spring (January)

There is no part-time provision

For a Church Aided School a ‘trust deed’ lays down that the school is to provide education according to the principles of the Established Church for the children of the Parish.

Our school is a Church Aided School – this means that Kirkburton Parish Church and the Diocese of Wakefield have contributed towards the building of the school and will continue to pay for its upkeep. As the church has invested in the school it is appropriate that the criteria for admissions reflect this. Our school is also a neighbourhood school and provides services for Kirkburton within the Kirklees Metropolitan Council Education Directorate, and the criteria also reflect this.

ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES

If you wish to apply under Christian Commitment Criteria you must complete the Supplementary Information Form (SIF) provided by the school.

The Planned Admission Limit for admission to the reception class in the school year commencing September 2014 will be a maximum of 24. This arrangement follows consultation between the Governing Body, the Diocesan Board of Education, Local Authorities and other admissions authorities in the area. The Governing Body will not place any restrictions on admissions to reception class unless the number of children for whom admission is sought exceeds this number. By law, no infant class may contain more than thirty children.

The Local Authority operates a co-ordinated admissions scheme and administers a system of equal preferences under which all applications are considered equally and The School’s Governing Body allocates the available places in accordance with its published admissions policy. In the event that there are more applications than places available, the Governing Body will allocate places using the following criteria, which are listed in order of priority.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

The School will admit children with statements of Special Educational Needs in which The School is named on the Statement.

A map showing the admissions priority area for admissions is available at the school.

2 Parents

‘Parents’ include all those people who have a parental responsibility for a child as set out in the Children Act 1989. Where responsibility for a child is ‘shared’, the person receiving Child Benefit is deemed to be the parent responsible for completing application forms, and whose address will be used for admissions purposes.
