Dear colleagues,

Housing & Residential Education (HRE) is in the process of planning our annual ‘Tunnel of Oppression’ event, and would like to extend you the opportunity to be part of the planning committee. Tunnel is one of the most meaningful and impactful events HRE facilitates and we are looking for intentional collaboration with others in the department. There are a number of different ways to get involved, in varying degrees of responsibility.

1)For the superstars, there is the opportunity to co-chair a committee with a professional staff member of HRE. Below are the committees that need co-chairs. If you are interested, please reach out to Mike McCormack to let him know. Committees will be working groups outside that complete projects as needed. If the group wants, you can create meeting times outside the planning meetings to work on projects together.

2)You can join a committee as a working member as opposed to co-chairing. Simply reach out to Mike and let him know which committee you would be interested in joining.

3)ALL are encouraged to attend our Friday planning meetings, from 9:30-10:30 in Anacapa A105 to hear about committee progress, visions and plans for the event, and work on different projects as needed. The first meeting will be this Friday, the 16th and will be biweekly, until the end of October, when they will become weekly (as we will need the time).

Here are the committees!

Sub-Committee / Description / Committee Chair / Contact to join committee:
Tunnel of Oppression (TOO) Event Planning Chairs: Mike McCormack, Coordinator of Community Programs and Evelyn Taylor, Lead Program Assistant for Diversity Awareness and Education
Content / This committee (with input from all committees) will review the past events, assessments, and feedback to determine changes to the event for 2015. This committee will perform research to update content in rooms, as well as work with other committees to arrange supplies and updates to acting scenarios. / Mike McCormack and Evelyn Taylor
Logistics & Assessment / This committee will be responsible for space reservation, room set-up design, coordinating supplies, as well as developing and preparing the event assessment. / (2) Tanya Yancheson
Marketing / This committee is responsible for creating the event logo and marketing materials, both electronic and hard copy. In addition, this committee is responsible for the design of the button hand-outs, T-shirts, and coordination of social media. / (2) Britney Summerville and Claire Langeveldt
TOO Facilitation / Those interested in serving as facilitators for the event would join from this committee. Facilitators are trained on the activity, including providing the tour opening and leading the closing debrief for the event. NOTE: The Facilitator role is only open to professional staff. / (2) Venessa G
Volunteers & Actors / This committee will recruit, train, and assign student volunteers and actors for the event. This includes scheduling, assisting with facilitation of the volunteer and actor diversity training, assisting actors with rehearsals, and assisting with volunteer coordination the day of the event. / (2) Gary G

I really appreciate all the hard work you will all put into Tunnel. It is a lot of work, but event that will challenge and change our students for the better. Please feel free to send the planning meeting time and event to any student or colleague that you find may benefit or enjoy attending.
