C. Listen to the passage and tell whether the following statements are true or false:
Dogs are very good pets. They are very friendly to people and very beautiful, too. Most dogs get on well with children and their parents. Others are good watchdogs because they cry loudly when a strange person appears.
When you buy a dog, an important thing to think about is its size—buy a small dog if your house is small and a big one if your house is large. Many people don't know what to feed their dogs on. Dogs eat almost anything! They like meat, rice and lots of other things. You can buy lots of food which is made for dogs in shops. Don't let your dog eat too much. Always leave some clean water for your dog. It can get thirsty very quickly, especially in summer.
Remember that dogs need exercise. You should take it for a walk every day. Don't keep your dog at home all day.

D. Listen to the passage and complete the following sentences:
Life in 30 years will be different because many changes will take place, but what will the changes be like?
The population is growing fast. There will be more and more people in the world and most of them will live longer than before. Computers will be much smaller and more useful, and there will be at least one in every home. And computer studies will probably be one of the most important subjects in school.
People will work fewer hours than they do now, and they will have more free time for sports, watching TV and traveling. Traveling will be much cheaper and easier. And many more people will go to other countries for holiday.
There will be changes in our food, too. More land will be used for building new towns and houses. Then there will be less room for cows and sheep, so meat will be more expensive. Maybe people won’t eat it every day, and they will eat more vegetables and fruit instead. Therefore, they may be healthier.
Work in the future will also be different. Dangerous and hard work will be done by robots. Because of this, many people will not have enough work to do. This will be a problem.

B. Listen to the passage and tell whether the following statements are true or false:
I have never taken cooking classes. I learned cooking from my mother because she was really interested in teaching me how to cook. The main reason for this was because when my mother got married, she didn’t know how to cook anything, not even an egg. My grandmother never allowed her to stay in the kitchen when she was cooking.
My mother did not start to cook until she was 25. In the beginning, it was very hard for her. Therefore, she had to take cooking classes to learn to prepare our meals. After having that experience, she decided to teach me how to cook because she didn’t want me to have the same experience.
I remember when I was seven years old, I started to learn cooking from my mother. Sometimes we prepared meals that my mother already knew how to make, and sometimes we prepared meals from recipes. Thanks to that experience, now I don’t need any help to cook a meal: I can cook for myself or for a group of people. I will do the same with my children because I don’t want them to have the same experience as my mother. If one day I am not with them, I want to be sure that they can continue their life without me.

Passage A
Housing in China has gotten bigger and better in recent years, especially since the country adopted its reform and opening-up policy in the late 1970s.
Improvements in housing have come about along with China’s rapidly developing economy. The dramatic advancements in housing can be seen almost everywhere in major cities and towns across the country.
In the past, it was common for more than 10 families to be packed into one ragged house as the housing conditions were not that good. The only kitchen was far from enough: So many people had to cook anywhere they could find a space. Because of the limited living area, all family members had to live together; that is to say, children lived in the attic, and parents lived in the living room. It was quite common to see three generations living in one place.
The biggest dream most people had in those days was to move into a bigger house. But before the 1980s, few people owned their homes. Most lived in dormitories built by their work units and paid a few yuanin rent each month. Now the dream gradually came true.
China’s average housing area per capita for urban residents has increased from 6.7 square meters in 1978 to more than 21 square meters in 2008, and further up to 27 square meters today. More people experience the continuous development of China.

Passage B
One of the biggest challenges that scientists face is to make robots think. Of course, we cannot make a real human brain for a robot. And that could even be dangerous because the robots might decide not to do what the scientists want them to do. There have been many frightening films and books about robots controlling humans.
But scientists do want to make robots that can do more things for humans. One recent experiment in developing“thinking robots” has been to make robots that can play football. It is called Robotcup football.
These robots know if another robot is near and which team he is playing for because they can tell which color it is. The robot can then move the ball in a suitable direction to another player on its own side. The robots have seven sensors to give it information about what is near and what it must do. The robots can move 90 centimeters in a second, forwards and backwards, so it is exciting to watch them play! They can defend by forming a group and can attack and score goals.
The goalkeeper has two eyes. The one at the back keeps the goalkeeper near his goal line. The eye at the front helps it move the ball to the right or the left. Games are really a good way for scientists to test robots.

C. Listen to the passage and tell whether the following statements are true or false:
What time is it? There are actually many ways you can know the time. You may have a watch. You can look at a clock on the wall. You can listen to the radio or call a number on the telephone to know the time.
It has not always been easy to know the time. A long time ago, people told the time by looking at the sun in the sky: morning, noon or afternoon.
Around the year 1400, people began to use the hourglass. It was made of glass with some sand in it. It was wide at both ends, but narrow in the middle. Then sand ran from one end to the other in one hour. At the end of every hour people turned the glass over and began again.
Hundreds of years later, a machine called clock was invented. After that people made small clocks so that they could carry them in their pockets. Very small clocks were called watches. Then, during World War I, men started wearing their watches. It became easier to tell the time. Now almost everyone wears a watch.

Many French teachers and parents complain that their kids are not brighter than they are. They say young people visit museums less often and spend too much time on the Internet. Most French middle school students love music, with 86% putting it as their top hobby, above the cinema, sports and television.
French kids read a lot and like different things, from Japanese cartoons to American story books. Many French people worry that their children watch too many American films and listen to too much American music.
But this survey shows that young French people like their own culture. As Silvia Berlin, a student from Paris, says, “I love watching American TV, but I actually watch more French programs. I love French culture!”
