A Lecture Meeting on “ENERGY CONSERVATION – A VALUE ADDITION”

(August 26, 2013)

The Institution of Engineers (India), UP State Centre organized a technical lecture on “Energy Conservation – A Value Addition”. The main speaker Shri T. N. Chaturvedi while delivering his lecture said that any organization engaged in providing goods and services consumes energy in terms of fuel and/or electricity. Energy Conservation practices inculcated in its management add value by directly reducing its cost of operations and improving its viability and competitive edge. As energy has an associated environmental aspect also, additionally it also improves its image globally as being an eco-friendly responsible organization promoting sustainability. ‘Environment’ has assumed considerable importance over the past decade with the global attention centered on Climate Change, as the increased fossil fuel consumption to meet the exponentially increasing energy requirements is resulting in manifold generation of the Green House Gases (GHG) leading to Global Warming and Climate Change. Climate Change – a Global Challenge – is currently the focus of the world. Global Warming is the consequence of the reliance on production and consumption processes based on Carbon and Fossil Fuels, which has dominated the world in the past and which still continues. It is the accumulated emissions from these processes that cause global warming and hence the need to achieve significant reductions in these emissions before the consequences of climate change become irreversible and probably reach catastrophic proportions. This challenge requires action on both national and international levels, squarely focusing on generation and use of ENERGY. A clear understanding of some vital concepts, viz. “Ecological Footprint”, “Carbon Footprint”, “Global Warming” & “Green House Gases”, as also the “Carbon Cycle”, “Water Cycle” & “Nitrogen Cycle”, is required to understand Energy Conservation in the global context. The lecture focused on the above concepts describing the actions required even on individual levels to reduce the Carbon Footprint by increasing the energy efficiency in the daily living. Earlier Shri V. B. Singh, Chairman, The Institution of Engineers (India), UP State Centre welcomed the guests and expressed concern on growing increase in energy losses of the Govt.SectorPowerDistributionCompaniesState which has risen to the tune of about 40%. Shri J. S. Mishra, Hony. Secretary moved vote of thanks.
