A HOMEMADE HOUSE OF CIRCUITS PROJECT:
PHYSICS ADVANCED 2014
DUE DATE : TUESDAY MARCH 25,2014
TAKS 1,5 TEKS 1A,2A-2D, 6D,6E,6F STAAR RS 5F SS 5G
Objective:
- You and up to 2 partnerswill design and construct a homemade electric house/arena/field with two separateseries circuits, two separate parallel circuits, acombined series and parallel circuit, a working doorbell or ceiling fan.
- The house/arena/field will consist of one or two stories. If you construct a house, it will contain at least the following areas: one bedroom, one bathroom, a kitchen, a porch, a frontdoor, anda living room/dining room area.If you construct a field, it needs to have two dressing rooms, a press box and an area for the fans to sit.
- Each individual room/area will be illuminated by its own light.
- We are doing this project to learn how to wire simple circuits and to learn how your house is wired.
Materials:
Your team will provide the materials needed for the house frame, glue, additional tools, decorations, furniture and the batteries, because it is a homemade project. Example: you can use a cardboard box for your house. I have plenty of wires and lights you can borrow once you have your house/arena/fieldbuilt and we have completed all the labs that go with this section.
Requirements:
- The house/arena/field dimensions are approximately: at least 24" by 24" horizontallyor vertically.
Each house will be wired with 5 different circuitsas follows:
-The living room areamust have an area with at least three lights in a
SERIES CIRCUIT with a switch. There must be another series circuit somewhere in your house/field/arena.
- The house must have twoPARALLEL CIRCUITS consisting of a switch and at
least two lights.
- The house must have oneCOMBINATION CIRCUIT consisting of two
switches and at least three lights.
- The front door must have a doorbell (buzzer) and/or a switch.
- The use of the motor is open-ended, that is, you will incorporate the motor
in the house in a creative manner. Some ideas are: an elevator, a ceiling
fan, garage door, used in the raising of a flag.
Scoring Rubric:DUE DATE MARCH 25,2014
The score of your project consists of 200 points divided into two parts:
I. HOMEMADE HOUSE OF CIRCUITS PROJECT = 200 pointsTHIS WILL COUNT AS AN EXAM GRADE
Meeting minimum construction requirements:
Neat house/arena/field assembly, four rooms, and a porch = 60 pts
House/arena is homemade and is 24” by 24”40 pts
Successfully meeting series circuit minimum requirements = 20 pts
Successfully meeting parallel circuit minimum requirements = 20 pts
Successfully meeting complex circuit minimum requirements = 20 pts
Successfully meeting doorbell requirement = 20 pts
Successfully incorporating the motor = 20 pts
II. Individual Project = 100 pointsTHIS WILL COUNT AS A LAB/DAILY GRADE
- Drawing and schematic (blueprint)of house, all in cm, including every circuit combination. Here you must use the correct symbols =50 pts
- Calculations and measurements of resistance, voltage and current for each circuit= 50 pts
Bonus for creativity and/or ingenuity = +20 pts
