A Gallery for Photography and Photographers July-August , 2006

Closing Reception August 26th, 6-9 PM

We’re pleased to announce another reception for this popular exhibit, a chance to talk to the photographers and see their work again. This is actually a first for the Gallery and an event we’

re looking forward to.

Don’t miss the closing reception on August 26th, 6-9 PM where you can talk to other fans of these photographers, share some snacks and drinks, and choose your favorite photo to take home with you. See you there!

“Trucks and Truckers,” Jim Hilgendorf

Jim Hilgendorf has been photographing trucks, truckers and the locations they stop at for rest and refueling for the past two years. This exhibit consists of new photographs from this continuing project which was facilitated by the good graces of TravelCenters of America., which gave him permission to travel to and photograph their truck stop/travel centers around the US.

He previously didn’t have any problems finding interesting people and places to photograph during his many travels overseas as part of his working career in Asia and South America. Since retiring to the States four years ago however, it was challenging to him to find equally interesting subjects in the US. This exhibit is from the long term project he assigned himself two years ago to remedy this.

Over the past two years his fascinating US journey has covered some 10,000 miles and more than 15 different locations, from Jessup, MD to Ontario, CA. Along the way he has had the chance to meet a diverse set of individuals representing a true cross-section of America. While some photographs in the exhibit focus on the colorful personalities of the truckers as well as the beauty of their trucks, other works endeavor to capture the alluring aesthetic residing within the truck stops themselves.

Inevitably, those who have the good fortune to visit Gallery 14 will begin to appreciate the unique visual richness of the truck stop structures and will gain insight into the people and machines that frequent them.

You can see more of Jim’s work on the Gallery 14 website, www.photosgallery14.com and at www.jimhilgendorf.com.

“The Value of the Land,” Kathleen Connally

Kathleen Connally grew up in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania during the 1970s, before urban sprawl crept into the legendary Brandywine Valley, home to three generations of Wyeth family artists as well as countless other painters and illustrators inspired by the pastoral beauty of the southern Chester County countryside. Raised within a thriving art community alongside working farms and undeveloped land, Kathleen’s surroundings fostered a passion for photography and a quest to represent and preserve the rural character of Pennsylvania through her images.

After living and working in New York City, London and Seattle, Kathleen settled in Durham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1999, an area similar to her hometown of Chadds Ford in rural character and topography. Durham Township is the ongoing subject of Kathleen’s award-winning, regularly updated photoblog, A Walk Through Durham Township, Pennsylvania, on line at www.durhamtownship.com.

The images in this exhibit were taken between January and June 2006, showing the land in and around Durham Township as it exists now: undisturbed, undeveloped, used by farmers and enjoyed by others as open space. These photographs are about the importance of undeveloped areas to our minds, bodies and spirits; our food and clean water come from farms and undisturbed watersheds, and we are nurtured both physically and spiritually by the beauty and variety of untouched fields, forests, lakes and rivers. Kathleen hopes to impart the message that an open horizon is, perhaps, the most valuable real estate of all.

Ms. Connally has exhibited her work widely. Her photo, "Warm Day in January", recently won the "People's Choice Award" at the 2006 Phillips Mill Photographic Exhibition. It is a moody farm landscape reminiscent of Cartier-Bresson as well in the image of a young boy jumping, reflected in the puddle. Another photograph “Jenn Jumping” is an exhuberant celebration of life filled with youth and energy, as effective in black and white as it is in its original color with the background of a brilliant blue sky. You can see additional photographs by Ms. Connally at www.durhamtownship.com.

For additional information see the Gallery 14 website, www.photosgallery14.com, call Jim Hilgendorf at 215-565-6063, or David Miller, 609-577-0564. You may also leave a message at the Gallery, 609-333-8511. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays, 12-5 and by appointment. For additional photographs for publication please contact us directly.

The exhibits opened on Friday, July 14 and will continue through August 27.

The Closing Reception is August 26th, 6-9 PM at the Gallery.

Our Photographers’ Current Projects

Martha Weintraub and Rhoda Kassof-Isaacs

Our next exhibit, opening in September and celebrating the 5th anniversary of the opening of Gallery 14, will feature these two photographers in a joint exhibit with a common theme: “Beyond Photography”. This is a particularly intriguing title since it represents the growth of the gallery and it’s members understanding of their photographic quest over the past 5 years. Martha and Rhoda will be exploring the tools to take their photographs beyond what the camera has seen into what their minds’ eye sees and creates. For those of you who already know some of their work, you’ll know that their creativity will be a real treat for our eyes.

David Miller

Dave continues to travel, his latest trip a long one to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands (where the primary event was catching the Falklands Mullet on a fly!). He is working on this Antarctica photographs for a possible exhibit, but is currently producing a series of photographs from travels in the Scottish islands, Lewis, Mull, Iona, Scaffa, Rum and others, tentatively entitled “Sacred Stones of Scotland” which features the Rings of Brodgar, the stones of Callanish, and others.

His next trip in September will combine exotic fishing in the mountains of northern Mongolia and riding with Kazak golden eagle hunters in western Mongolia, where he hopes to do a series of portraits and some panoramic photography as well. His fishing slide lecture is tentatively entitled: “Two Guys in a Yurt: Flyfishing for Taimen”.

Joanna Tully

After her very successful exhibit last month, Joanna has already embarked on a project to photograph at Coney Island. More about this as the project evolves.

Ed Greenblat

Ed is still photographing with the Princeton EMS services, but will be offering a different photopgraphic experience in his exhibit opening in October. His subject is “Costa Rica: People, Places and just One Monkey”, which gives you a taste of the whimsy that will be seen in this exhibit!

Jay Goodkind

Jay will be showing a group of his classic black and white work in mid November. The exhibit is tentatively titled “An Assembly of Trees”. It’s a project that includes images from his recent work as well as past, drawing on his long experience and his ability to see beauty in the everyday.

Frank Magalhaes

Frank is just back from a long trip to the southwest where he found a variety of new images that we’ll be seeing. The first of these is already up in the members’ gallery during the current June show, so drop in to see it.

The Next Exhibit

Gallery 14’s 5th Anniversary!

September 8

In “Photographs from the Imagination”, Rhoda Kassof-Isaac and Martha Weintraub are stretching photography into the world of mystery and imagination. Each starts with photographs and ends with her own unique creations.

These two women share a similar language of visual expression that comes from deeper sources than seen on the surface. Both artists use what they see in nature, places, objects, and people and they then combine images, change dimensions, alter colors, layer and blend to create new worlds. The images contain a sense of wonder that can take the viewer to new places in time and space. There are narrative threads, which viewers may draw into their own stories. The story the art conveys depends in part on what you bring to it. The artists’ fantasies, dreams, and memories evident in the images should provide viewers of all ages with stimulating experiences.

Discussion Groups

Our monthly meeting to discuss the aesthetics of photographs continues to draw a small but highly engaged group of photographers. In the past month of May we had about 12 participants showing their work, and a lively discussion that went from 7:30 until 10 PM. It was hard to get folks to leave!

We’ve also started a new discussion group which will concentrate on digital photographic techniques. So there it will be OK to talk about Genuine Fractals, and other esoteric means of manipulating files to create your art without being frowned upon as a techno-geek! More about this in the future as we figure out how to organize it to best advantage.
