BACKGROUND:

The Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders service at the Maudsley hospital is nationally and internationally renowned for therapeutic innovation and research evaluation of psychological treatments for child and adolescent eating disorders. Findings from our studies are frequently quoted as a key part of evidence for the effectiveness of family therapy for adolescent anorexia nervosa.

The core part of our treatment approach is Systemic Family Therapy for anorexia nervosa (SFT-AN) sometimesreferred to as the Maudsley Approach, which we have manualized for both single and multi family application. The treatment is best delivered in a multidisciplinary team context, which integrates the psychological, medical and nutritional aspects of treatment and places a strong emphasis on working closely with families, helping them to re-discover their strengths and resources with the parents taking an active role in finding ways to overcome their child’s illness. The advertised training focuses on the application of SFT-AN with individual families (separate training is available for multi family application).

AIMS OF THE TRAINING:

  • To present the research and theoretical underpinning of SFT-AN and to illustrate how the theory relates to clinical practice
  • To provide training inthe use of an evidence based, manualized treatment for eating disorders
  • To illustrate through facilitative group participation and experiential exercises the key elements of the treatment approach
  • To provide participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence in order to apply the treatment to their own clinical setting
  • For the follow-up day for participants to bring cases for consultation
