(B)Review and Evaluation

The review for admission is based on the applicant’s written documents and materials

submitted to the University.

(C) Other Requirements

(1)Department of Chinese Literature

a. An autobiography in Chinese is required in the application for undergraduate and graduate programs.

b. A research plan is required in the application for graduate programs.

c.Applicants for the doctoral program should submit a copy of their Chinese publications.

(2)Department of Foreign Languages and Literature

a. All applicants are required to take a written examination and/or an interview, if necessary.

b. Applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to demonstrate their English proficiency by a language proficiency test (such as TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS) certificate obtained within the previous two years.

c. Applicants for the master program should submit an official transcipt of their undergraduate studies and indicate the program (literature or linguistics) they are applying for. Should applicants who are not majoring in this department be admitted, they should take the relevant professional courses and a second foreign course in the undergraduate program.

d. Applicants for the doctoral program should submit a copy of their master theses and relevant publications. An official transcript of graduate level coursework should show at least 3 subjects in English or American Literature or related areas that have been completed.

(3)Department of History

Should applicants who are not majoring in this department be admitted, they are required to take General Chinese History, Taiwan History and History of World Culture in the undergraduate program.

(4) Department of Taiwanese Literature

Should international students be admitted in the undergraduate or postgraduate programs in this department, they are required to take a pre-requisite course in Basic Taiwanese (either Ho-lo Taiwanese or Hakka) for 8 credits or 144 hours, before taking Basic Taiwanese Languages and Writing I & II. This pre-requisite course can be waived on the basis of the applicant’s language proficiency.

(5) Department of Life Sciences & Institute of Biodiversity

a. Applicants for doctoral program should submit a copy of their master thesis (must include an English abstract) or relevant publications.

b. Related documents such as awards, publications, or conducted projects helpful for evaluation are required.

c. Applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to demonstrate their English proficiency by a language proficiency test (such as TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS) certificate.

(6) Department of Earth Sciences & Institute of Satellite Informatics and Earth Environment

a. Applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to demonstrate their English proficiency by a language proficiency test (such as TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS) certificate.

b. Applicants for the undergraduate program should submit an official transcipt of their previous degree.

c. A study plan in English is required, consisting of education background, research interest, motivation for further study and methodology.

d. Related documents such as awards, publications, or conducted projects helpful for evaluation are required.

e. Applicants for doctoral program should submit a copy of their master thesis.

(7) Institute of Biomedical Engineering

Applicants holding a bachelor’s degree in medicine, dentistry or Chinese medicine along with a medical specialist license can apply for the doctoral program.

(8) Department of Nursing

Applicants must have at least one year working experience in the nursing field. Applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to demonstrate their English proficiency by a language proficiency test (such as TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS) certificate.

A telephone or face-to-face interviewis required.

(9) Department of Electrical Engineering, Institute of Microelectronics, Institute of Computer and Communication Engineering , Department of Chemical Engineering & Department of Materials Science and Engineering

a.Official transcripts and other relevant documents, such as awards, reports, or participated projects are required.

b.Applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to demonstrate their English proficiency by a language proficiency test (such as TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS) certificate.

c.Applicants for the doctoral programs should submit a copy of their master thesis and relevant publications.

(10) Department of Industrial Design & Institute of Creative Industry Design

A telephone or face-to-face interviewis required if necessary.

(11) Department of Business AdministrationInstitute of International Business

Language Requirement:

All international students are required to submit the following proof for his/her language skill. Please be noted that though there are some courses in the postgraduate programs that are conducted in English, most courses in the program are conducted in Chinese.

a. Chinese: Written proof of 6 months (or more) of Chinese learning.

b. English: All students whose previous degree was not conducted in English needs to pass one of the following English proficiency exams:

Undergraduate Program:GEPT – Intermediate / TOEFL iBT 69 / CBT 193 / TOEFL

Paper 523 / IELTSLevel 5.0 or above / TOEIC700 or above

Master Program:GEPT - High Intermediate - First Round / TOEFL CBT 197 /

TOEFL Paper 530 / TOEIC600 or above

Doctoral Program:GEPT - High Intermediate - First Round / TOEFL CBT 197 /

(12) Department of Medicine & Department of Physical Therapy

Applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to demonstrate their English proficiency by a language proficiency test (such as TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS) certificate.

Applicants must be able to communicate in Chinese Mandarin or Taiwanese. A telephone interview in Chinese Mandarin or Taiwanese is required if necessary.

(13) Department of Law

Applicants must be able to communicate in Chinese. A telephone interview in Chinese is required if necessary.

(14) Institute of Cognitive Science

A research plan and a description of research interests are required.
