Route Seven

A 7½ mile circular route at an average speed of 5 mph, 1½ hours of cycling time.

Beeston Marina – Canal path to Lenton Lane – Birdcage Walk – River Trent.

From Beeston Lock at the bottom of South Road in the Rylands, cross over the canal using the foot bridge by the lock.

Prior to starting, please note the Lock Number for Beeston Lock.

Answer

Take the track that heads towards Nottingham, this will mean the canal will now be on your left hand side.

Continue along the track until you drop down onto the towpath, this is where there is a hump back bridge going back over the canal, do not go over it.

Proceed along the tow path, the canal will still be on your left, for just over 2 miles, once you have gone under Clifton Boulevard and within a short distance, you will come to the bridge over the canal that carries Lenton Lane.

Please give the bridge number.

Answer

Go up the steps, there is a slot on the right hand side so that you can push a bike up.

Turn right onto Lenton Lane, please be careful with the Tram Tracks, and continue along the lane.

Just over the rise of the bridge that takes you over the railway track, the is a cycle path to your left, this is ‘Birdcage Walk’, approximately 500 yards from leaving the canal.

Follow Birdcage Walk alongside the River Leen towards Queens Drive, as you approach Queens Drive, the cycle track bends to the right, this takes you to the crossing at the end of Crossgate Drive.

Cross the Queens Drive using the cycle lane, or walk across if you prefer, once over, turn right into Robin Hood way.

Within a short distance, immediately after the buildings on your right, take the crossing that will take you to the side of the River Trent.

Turn right, so that the river is on your left, and follow the river along, this will shortly take you alongside Queens Drive, which will be to your right.

Prior to the traffic lights at the entrance of the ‘Park & Ride’, look for the entrance to the trail that runs alongside the Trent, it has large vertical timber posts at the entrance.

Proceed along this track that will take you firstly between the Park & Ride and the River Trent, and then back under the Clifton Boulevard.

Route Seven continued

This track will come out on a small lane, turn left, and within a few yards you can re-join the track on your left.

On join the path, there is a sports field on your right, what winter sport is played there?

Answer

Continue following the track alongside the Trent until you reach the weir.

If possible, please take selfie picture at the Picnic Area so that the Weir can be seen in the background.
