Global Warming?

You are creating a presentation about whether you believe that we are experiencing Global Warming. You are going to analyze historical weather data.

You can create a slide show ,paper report or other approved format.

It must contain a paragraph of global warming. (Be sure to credit your sources)

Find the historical mean temperatures (even years only) for a selected month at the location of your choice. Be careful to choose a location that has enough historical data.

You should have 100 years of data, plotting even years only)

You may use any reputable website for the data, the one below is the easiest one that I have found.

Go to:

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/

Click on climate at a glance

Then choose time series

Make sure you are on the US tab…. Then choose a location, make sure there is enough data available. You can set the scale to 24 months, be sure to start with an even year. (you should have a minimum of 100 year range)

Once you choose your options the information will be displayed as shown on the next page. You need to create your own table of values using graph paper, excel or google sheets spread sheet and a scatter plot (either by hand or by a graphing program) be sure to credit your sources.

The date is shown as year and month (189503 = march 1895)

You must analyze your graph.

Analyze your graph, is there a trend in the data? If so what type?

If yes draw in a line of best fit. Find the equation of your line of best fit.

If there is no line of best fit find the equation of a line passing through (1958, 71.4) and (2015, 82.9)

Must show work.

Find the mean median, mode and range of your data

(either by hand or using excel or other progam)

Find the 5 number summary for your data and then create a box plot.

Analyze your box plot…. Is your data symmetric?

How is the data distributed, if it is not symmetric is it skewed left or right?

What measure of center is appropriate for your data?
