Word Study Activities

Pattern Sort
Sort your words by spelling pattern. Read each word aloud. Explain to a parent why you sorted in this particular way. You could also try a “speed sort” and record your time. / Writing Sort
This is great preparation for Friday’s test. Parents call out words in random order as you write them in the correct category. Parents check/initial and you can make necessary corrections. / Suffixes and Prefixes
Make appropriate words on your list plural (remember your plural rules) or add –ing or –ed. Add any prefixes/suffixes that could work. Think about how these change the meaning. Parent check/initial. / Sentence Practice
Select 5 words and use them in sentences. Remember to have a parent check for C.U.P.S and initial after you make corrections.
Blind Sort
Use headers and have a parent read the words to you. Without looking, indicate where the word goes. Parent should check it and correct as needed. / Writing

Create some circle maps. Include examples, nonexamples, sentence, meaning or bridge maps, making your word(s) into analogies. / Syllabication
Break words into syllables and underline the accented syllable.

Using a book you’ve already read, find words that fit your category headings. You can make up new categories. Put these sorts on a tree map. / Word Operations
See if you can change a letter (or letters) of any words on your list to make new words. For example, black could become stack, quack, track, shack. / Dictionary Practice
Select 5 words to look up in the dictionary (or www.dictionary.com). Record the meanings /multiple meanings you find for each word. / Draw and Label
Illustrate 5 or more words with simple drawings that reveal their meanings. Think about any multiple meanings, also.
