Outstanding Accomplishments

The Rifle team attended the WPIAL Championships on 15 Feb 2011 in Washington, Pa. The team was lead by captain Alyssa Hoffee, Mario Scaramouche, and Jaque Zollner who each shot perfect scores of 100 – 10X. The team scored a 799-67X and captured 2nd place overall in the WPIAL. This qualified the Wolverines to compete at the PIAA Interscholastic State Championship on 24 Feb 2011. The team finished 4th place overall in Pennsylvania.


4 students attended the WPIAL individual championship on 17 Feb. This very competitive event is attended by every school in the league (4 shooters form each league school) as well as schools that do not have programs but have individuals and coaches that wish to attend. The course of fire is double A-17 targets in a 20 min time limit. (therefore the score will be out of 200-20X-20Center shot. From WH: Seniors Alyssa Hoffee and Matt Komisars - Juniors Colin Letson and Jacque Zollner. RESULTS Alyssa Hoffee 199-15X (31st), Matt Komisars 200-18X-C (9th), Colin Letson 200-18X-6C (6th), Jacque Zollner 200-18X-8C (3rd)

Matt Komisars, Colin Letson, and Jacque Zollner advanced to the Pa individual state championship on 23 Feb. This is the most representation that Woodland Hills has ever enjoyed at this event. The course of fire is four A-50 targets - a difficult target in a 40 min time slot. Score is taken out of 400. Colin and Jacque took 21st and 16th places respectively, Matt scored a 393 and captured 3rd place overall in the state and was named to the PA State All Tournament Team.

Last season a Wolverine placed 2nd overall in the state, this year another Woodland Hills shooter places 3rd overall.

Also the WPIAL sponsors a competition at the end of the season only for seniors. The competition is hosted by Woodland Hills - this year it fell on Friday 25 Feb. The event was attended by all 13 WPIAL schools and 59 shooters. The course of fire is double A-17 targets in 20min (score out of 200-20X). WH Seniors Alyssa Hoffee and Leah Rudge both captured 1st place with perfect scores of 200-20X.

Team MVP this year is Anna Rubin who scored 1695 out of 1700 total points. Her average was 99.8 – 8X. Anna has been a varsity starter since her sophomore year. As captain she was the positive driving force behind the team always supporting her fellow teammates. For her contribution as captain this year and her many seasons of positive dedication she has earned the MVP award with special distinction as the “Pride of the Wolverines”

The team is very pleased that 7 varsity shooters will be returning next year. Among them are Clayton Baxter who had the 4th highest overall team average and was named to the PA State All tournament team, Colin Letson who placed 6th overall in the WPIAL and 21st in the state, Mario Scaramouche who was named to the WPIAL All Tournament Team, Jacque Zollner who had the 2nd highest team average, placed 3rd overall in the WPIAL, and was also named to the WPIAL All Tournament Team, and Laura Valenti, one of the teams “Fantastic Freshmen” who earned a varsity spot for the majority of the season. In addition are Adam Livingston, Erin Schwoegl, and Chuck Pantalone who also contributed excellent scores to the team over the course of the season. In total there will be 33 shooters returning next year - not including next year's rookies. The team is the second largest in the WPIAL only to Butler.

The team banquet was held at St. John Fisher Church in Churchill on 20 March 2011.

SEASON OVERVIEW

Overall, the Rifle Team had another excellent season. The Wolverines began the year with 5 veteran varsity shooters. In the preseason the Wolverines were undefeated and perfect as they faced tough non-section rivals Trinity and McGuffey. The Wolverines broke a record in the preseason by being the only team in Woodland Hills and WPIAL history not to drop any points in the entire preseason; 6 strait 800 performances. The team began section play in January with a 6 and 0 record and a varsity line-up eager to continue the undefeated streak. Lead by Captains Alyssa Hoffee and Anna Rubin the team sliced through the season Posting 4 perfect 800 scores. On February 4, 2011 the team defeated section rival Hempfield in one of the highest scoring WPIAL matches in recent record. WH 800 – 74X, Hempfield 800 – 70X. However, on Feb. 7 the team lost a close match to Hempfield for the section title by a score of 800-73X to 800-68X. The team entered the WPIAL Championship as the Section I Runner-up. The team shot very well at Championships and earned 2nd place overall in the WPIAL. At the annual WPIAL senior tournament hosted by WHHS, Alyssa Hoffe and Leah Rudge both shot perfect scores of 200 – 20X and captured 1st place overall in the event.Matt Komisars, Colin Letson, and Jacque Zollner represented the team at the PA State Rifle Championship where they shot very well. Matt placed 3rd overall and was named to the State All Tournament Team. Overall team average for the season was 799 – 67X out of 800 – 80X and the team varsity and JR varsity record combined was 30 wins and 6 losses. The team was lead by Seniors Chris Desilva, Alyssa Hoffee, Matt Komisars, Anna Rubin, and Leah Rudge. Juniors Clayton Baxter, Colin Letson, Adam Livingston, Mario Scaramouche, and Jacque Zollner, and rounded out by super sophomore Erin Schwoegl and fantastic freshman Lara Valenti. With the return of 7 varsity shooters and 26 JV shooters, the Wolverines are excited for another terrific season in 2012.
