WAEA Potawatomi Grant sponsored activity/program

Guidelines:

-Grants awarded will not exceed 1,000.00.

-Grant monies can only be used for student focused activities in grades kindergarten through college level.

-When grant/project is completed grant recipients must complete Section III of the application and submit a synopsis of the project to the WAEA President and present at the WAEA Fall Conference and/or write an article for the e-ArtTimes regarding WAEA sponsored project.

Summit Elementary School Nature and Fit Trail

The Summit Elementary School Nature and Fit Trail project will afford students the opportunity to work with a professional mosaic artist and visual design artist, create functional art, and learn about labyrinths, mosaics, and visual design. Ultimately, the trail will be a gift to the community welcoming visitors to take a walk through a labyrinth, try different exercises, rest, sketch, reflect, and enjoy the animals.

Students will make a Nature and Fit Trail for Summit Elementary School and the community by designing and installing a trailhead sign, painting fitness center signage in the style of Keith Haring, creating animals indigenous to the area, and a designing and building a labyrinth trail spur.

Project Essential Ideas

Artists can transform the environment aesthetically to reflect the interests and values of its inhabitants.

The quality of human life is affected by environmental and cultural interdependencies.

Involvement in art develops aesthetic awareness which can improve the quality of life.

Creative behavior involves divergent thinking, problem solving extension of the imagination as evidenced in both the general learning process and observable behaviors.

Lesson learning objectives with Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for Art and Design Education standards applicable to each objective

Students will understand how artists contribute to the aesthetic and cultural life of the community. Applicable WI Visual Art and Design Standard: D.4.1 Know basic information, such as the history, public art, and unique architecture, of their own cultural community

Students will explore the use of color, design, shape and texture to communicate specific information to the viewer. Applicable WI Visual Art and Design Standard: H.4.3 Show differences among colors, shapes, textures, and other qualities of objects in their artwork

Students will understand how art, regardless of medium used, provides information about the culture. Applicable WI Visual Art and Design Standard: J.4.6 Begin learning the value of art as a basic part of being human

Summit Nature and Fit Trail project preparation and procedure overview:

Visit playground and sketch overall landscape

Artist visit: Mosaic artist (TBD)

Examine examples of playground designs, labyrinths and fitness centers

View and discuss the work of Britto, Goldsworthy, Phalle, and Haring

Have students share their ideal trail configuration

Sketch design with a map legend

Create thumbnail drawings of pond habitants, signage for fitness centers, trail head, and labyrinth design

Share labyrinth design with entire school and vote on design for the Summit Nature and Fitness Trail

Have each student create a paver to define labyrinth

Assess critically signage for fitness centers-vote

Create fitness center signage-5 signs, teams of 4

Critique pond habitant drawings-10 habitants- teams of 2

Artist visit: Mrs. Field shares how to create a successful illustration and signage

Students collaboratively paint all signage

Students take the hand of a friend and enjoy a walk on the new Summit Nature and Fit Trail!

The Summit Nature and Fit Trail project will showcase student artist talents and abilities, additionally; the trail offers students, parents and the community the opportunity to get fit.

To reach a broader audience, if selected, I will share the Summit Nature and Fit Trail project highlights and challenges during a WAEA Conference and on the WAEA Past President’s Blog.

Evaluation procedure

Students will critique their own trail design and the trail designs of other artists.

During the Summit Elementary School Celebration of Learning, May 16, 2013, with the helping hands of their parents each student will place their labyrinth mosaic paver. After the placement of each labyrinth mosaic paver students, artist-in-residents, community members, parents and Summit teachers will be invited to collectively critique the trail by traveling the route from trailhead to labyrinth. A questionnaire will be provided to evaluate the effectiveness of the signage, level of challenge of the labyrinth, and the overall aesthetic appeal and impact of works of art along the trail. In addition to the questionnaire, Summit student docents, kindergarten through fourth grade will field questions about the process of creating each work of art.
