What is Sexual Harassment?

Sexual harassment includes all unwanted sexual attention, as well as the creation of an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment. Examples can include:

· sexually suggestive looks or gestures.

· sexual jokes or teasing.

· pressure for dates or sex.

· deliberate touching, cornering, or pinching.

· attempts to kiss or fondle.

· requests for sex in exchange for promotions or salary increases.

Sexual harassment occurs when:

· submission to such conduct is made either an explicit or implicit condition of employment, OR

· employment decisions are based upon an individual’s reaction to such conduct,

OR

· such conduct interferes un- reasonably with the individual’s work performance, or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment.

Remember, in order for the above conduct to be considered sexual harassment, it must be uninvited, unwanted, and non-reciprocal.

What You Can Do About It

· As a victim, act promptly to stop sexual harassment.

· As an employee, be willing to assist and discuss situations and issues related to sexual harass- ment with your co-workers.

· As a supervisor, become more aware of behavior which could be defined as sexual harassment.

How?

· Informal complaint procedures.

· Formal complaint procedures.

· Legal proceedings.

Complaint Procedures

Informal

The informal procedure involves personally confronting your harasser, with an explanation of the offensive behavior, and a request that the harasser stop the behavior. This can be achieved by:

· speaking personally to the harasser

· writing to the harasser

· confronting the harasser in public

If you are uncomfortable with the idea of personally confronting the harasser, consult your supervisor or one of the Sexual Harassment Consultants, who will help you deal with the harasser. Their names and telephone numbers are listed in this brochure. For further information on internal reporting of harassment or other wrong doing, see your copy of your Risk Management Training Acknowledgement Form.

Formal

If the harassment continues, keep track of all dates, times, places, and statements. This information will help you to file your formal complaint. This complaint should be filed with Bill Boyd, Assistant Superintendent for Administration. Once you have notified him, he is legally obligated to investigate your complaint and, if it is found to be true, take corrective action.
