BirthDAY Timeline

What happened on your DAY of birth?

Use research skills to find out about the day (not the year) you were born. Using the following websites (and ONLY these approved sites) find an IMPORTANT EVENT that happened on this day of birth AND how it corresponds to EACH of the 7 themes of Social Studies. Events are considered IMPORTANT by being significant enough to be remembered. NOT ALL EVENTS YOU FIND SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR YOUR TIMELINE! Be selective about what you choose. Your choices reflect your understanding of research, decision making, and connections to the themes of social studies.

Please do not use general search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, MSN, or the like to begin your search. This assignment will hopefully begin to shift the way you have been conducting “RESEARCH” in the past! You are encouraged to use any of the following websites!

Ø Use the following planning sheet to record your event, beginning with the year, on each of the lines provided.

o Be creative in thinking of how you could align your event with a theme of social studies!

o Keep in mind that many events will align with more than one theme! It’s your choice J

o As much as we all would like to believe our “dates of birth” are historic, please refrain from including a birth, death, etc. from our BirthDAY timeline. The exception of course is adding your year of birth as the very last (and non-related to a theme) event.

Ø Now transform the information on the planning sheet to build a personal timeline using the white timeline paper provided, commemorating the DAY of your birth.

o You must plan carefully, considering where to place each of your events to use the FULL length and height of your paper. (CENTER YOUR LINE)…you must demonstrate your understanding of how events along a timeline show lapses of time. Place 4 events on top and 4 on the bottom to maximize available space!

X 3 more events

X3 more events

§ Each event on your timeline must include the following:

· Establish 8 benchmark dates based on years (I used 50 year increments on the example above)

· One sentence caption with the year and theme identified (see example!)

· full color illustration or graphic (digital clip art, photo, stickers) colored pencils, crayons, markers, and other 2 and 3 D elements welcome!

o If you choose to draw, do not attempt to illustrate something that you are unable to draw with accuracy.

· Place your year & location of birth as the last event for a total of 8 events (non-theme labeled!)

· Leave space for a title for your timeline as your birthday (Ex. March 7) only the MONTH & DAY

§ Glue the RUBRIC TO THE BACK! Please review rubric before submission.

§ All work is to be legible and free of grammar & spelling errors.

Use these sheets as an organizer for your information. It is NOT necessary to turn these in.

Use the following as an example for March 7:

· Geography

1774: The British closed the port of Boston._

*However…this event could also align with history, economics, or even government
