NATIONALS 2006

Well where do I start? Perhaps it is best to start with what should have been a very non-eventful flight to Sydney. Who would have though that first timer – Tim – would have such a weak stomach. At least he left the plane with a souvenir complete with own carry bag. Karl did not want to be left out of the excitement and contributed by having a blood nose.

Upon arrival in Sydney we collected our rental car (Tarago) and proceeded to break all weight specifications that went along with the vehicle. After a lovely detour around Brighton- Le –Sands, and some creative navigation by Jason, we eventually reached our destination of Bass Hill. Accommodation was basic but fulfilled our purposes. Once established, the boys headed to the Sydney Olympic Park to have their first training session.

The first evening saw the boys head off to the Fair that was being held next to the caravan park. I don’t know if the boys noticed anything other than the two-legged variety of attractions but I am sure that Paul kept them all in tight reign??????? The next few evenings involved some very competitive games of poker. There was much at stake. Daniel and Jason had agreed that whoever went out of the game first would lose their hair (Jason’s beard). As you can all see, Daniel has learned not to gamble with the coaches.

During the course of our stay, Aleks and Filip conducted some scientific research. Just which way does warm aromatic air flow through a cabin window?? I am not sure of the results – perhaps it has something to do with the force that the air is released? Thank heavens we did not feed the boys baked beans. The results could have been disastrous.

During the week, Sandra, Maggie and Karlene joined our group. For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of eating one of Maggie’s curries, I suggest you do something about it. The best curry I can recall eating. I am not sure that Karlene’s trip to watch her brother swim will be that memorable as she slept through the entire race. Good thing her Mum has it on videotape!

One fun filled afternoon involved some high

classed cricket and football. Well not so high classed but eventful nonetheless. Tim got smacked in the mouth with the footy, and Aleks received his first blood nose compliments of Paul’s elbow. Sandra managed to knock down Jason and the rest of us tried to keep out of harms way.

Sandra’s influence on the group must be described as corruptive. By all accounts, Sandra, Jason, Paul and myself supposedly consumed four bottles of red wine during one evening. Perhaps that was the evening that I set fire to the microwave? Never mind – I deny everything!

The final day was a logistical nightmare. The task was to move 10 people and their luggage from Bass Hill to Manly before the commencement of the Open Water race. Mission accomplished after some more creative navigation by Jason. A big thank you to Daniel and Tim who packed up the cabins whilst everyone else was being taken to Manly.

Oh! To get to the real purpose of the trip, the boys swam very well and were a credit to the Werribee Swimming Club. Results are in the newsletter.

On a final note, all I can say is WATCH OUT PERTH 2007!
