Wendy Greuel named 2016-17 Chair of Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority Commission

Los Angeles, CA (July 25, 2016) – Wendy Greuel has been named 2016-17 chair of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority Commission, the 10-member body that governs the authority. Greuel, an appointee of Mayor Eric Garcetti’s, received the unanimous support of her colleagues present at last Friday’s commission meeting.

“I’m grateful to my fellow commissioners for their support,” said Greuel, “and honored to be named chair at a time when homelessness has become the most pressing issue in the city and county of Los Angeles.”

A native of Los Angeles and graduate of UCLA, Greuel served as Deputy Director of the Interagency Council on Homelessness in President Bill Clinton’s administration. She later served as Southern California Director at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

In 2002, Greuel was elected to the Los Angeles City Council, where she quickly developed a reputation for creating jobs, preserving open space, and reducing traffic congestion.

In 2009, she was elected city controller, only the second woman in the history of Los Angeles to win citywide office. As controller, Greuel scrutinized government finances to ensure that tax dollars were spent efficiently and that government was operating with greater transparency.

“I congratulate Wendy on being named chair,” said Peter Lynn, executive director of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. “She brings to her new role invaluable experience and insight, which will be of great benefit in LASHA’s efforts to end homelessness in our region.”

Greuel replaces Mike Neely as chair.

The Commission also unanimously approved Rabbi Noah Zvi Farkas as vice chair. Rabbi Farkas, who is affiliated with Valley Beth Shalom, was appointed to the Commission by Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl. In addition to his work at VBS, Rabbi Farkas founded Netiya, the faith-based network that converts unused land at our institutions to grow nutritious food.
