Welcome to 6th Grade Social Studies

Regions and People of the Eastern Hemisphere

In grade six, students study the Eastern Hemisphere (Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe), its geographic features, early history, cultural development and economic change.

Students learn about the development of river civilizations in Africa and Asia, including their governments, cultures and economic systems.

The geographic focus includes the study of contemporary regional characteristics, the movement of people, products and ideas, and cultural diversity.

Students develop their understanding of the role of consumers and the interaction of markets, resources and competition.

BINDER & INTERACTIVE STUDENT NOTEBOOKS (ISN)

In this class, it is necessary and required to bring your social studies binder with your interactive student notebook (ISN) EVERY DAY. Your ISN will be used for class notes as well as for other activities where you will be asked to express your own ideas and process the information presented by this class. This process will also help you to organize your studies in order to reinforce major concepts of each unit. Notebook assignments need to be kept up or students will be overwhelmed with make-up work

BINDER DIVIDERS: label them with the following headings & place them in your binder in this order: Warm-Ups, Vocabulary, Mapping Labs, Graded Work, Classwork & ISN

DAILY WARM-UPS

Every day will begin with a “warm-up.” You will find the prompt on the board. Work should be started before the bell rings, after filling out your agenda. Once the bell has rung, you will have a few minutes to complete the warm-up. You should use the same sheet of paper for an entire week’s warm-ups. Warm-Ups for the week will be collected on Friday. They are worth 2pts/day (1 point for copying the question, 1 point for having the correct answer). If you are absent, it is your responsibility to write “Absent” on the paper and date it. Otherwise, you will lose those 2 points.

GRADES

A point system is used to determine your grade. You will receive a number of points for each assignment. Your grade is calculated by dividing the amount of points that you receive by the total points possible for the assignment. The following is an outline of the point system:

Major Projects = 100-200 points

Tests = 100 points

ISN/Binder = 50-150 points. Varies depending on unit work, students will be informed of point value before due date

Quizzes = 25-75 points
In-class work = 5-25 points

Homework = 5-20 points

Groupwork/ = 5-10 points/activity

Participation

Warm-Ups = 2 points/day

If you ever receive a failing grade on a test or project you are responsible for getting the paper signed by your parents.

GROUPWORK

In this class, you will learn in an interactive and engaging way. Some of the class time will be spent working in groups. We will have a tolerant and cooperative classroom. There are three basic guidelines that will govern group work in this class. They are:

1. Everyone, including the teacher, will be treated with respect.

2. Putdowns and purposely hurtful comments or actions will not be tolerated.

3. No one will be allowed to disrupt the learning process of anyone else.

A portion of your grade for class work and projects will come from your group participation. In life, you do not always get to choose whom you work with, so the same is true in this classroom. Our goal is to work well with EVERYONE!

STUDENT SUPPORT POLICY

I am willing to spend as much extra time before and after school each day working with students as is necessary for students to succeed. In return, I expect students to be prepared for class each day and give 100% effort! J
