Walk Two Moons – Summer Reading Assessment

Answer each question on notebook paper. A thorough explanation with textual support is expected for each response.

RL2: The learner will determine the theme or central idea of a literary text by describing how it is conveyed through particular details in the text.

1. Explain how Sharon Creech developed the theme of perspective and understanding of others’ situations through quotes such as: “Don't judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins,” in the book Walk Two Moons. Use specific details from the text to show how the theme was conveyed. Be sure to cite that textual evidence.

RL3: The learner will analyze how a particular story’s or drama’s plot unfolds in a series of episodes by describing how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution.

2. Choose 3 or 4 quotes from your Reading Log that demonstrate the character of Sal undergoing some sort of change; then, discuss how those changes in Sal’s character help to move the plot of the story towards its resolution. Be sure to cite specific textual evidence to support your answer.

RL5: The learner will analyze how a specific sentence, chapter, scene, or stanza fits into the overall structure of the text by explaining how they contribute to the development of the theme, setting, or plot.

3. Explain how the following sentence contributes to the development of the theme, setting, or plot: "Just over a year ago, my father plucked me up like a weed and took me and all our belongings. . . and stopped in front of a house in Euclid, Ohio." Cite specific details from the text to support your ideas.

RL6: The learner will examine a literary text by explaining how the author develops the point of view of the narrator or speaker in a text.

4. How does Sal’s perspective affect the plot of the story? What does the author use/do in the story to show the reader Sal’s perspective on the issues in the story? Use specific details from the text to support your ideas.
