VA Gives $19 Million Grant for Milford Veterans Home

WASHINGTON – Veterans in Delaware will have greater access to long-term health care, thanks to a $19.4 million grant awarded Aug. 2 by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for a new state nursing home in Milford.

“This grant honors our commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform,” said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “Our federal-state partnership will provide a comfortable home for Delaware’s veterans in a time of personal need.”

The grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost to construct a new 150-bed nursing home and domiciliary in Milford. Overall cost of the project is estimated at $29.9 million.

In fiscal year 2004, VA spent more than $184 million in Delaware to serve about 85,000 state veterans. VA operates a major medical center in Wilmington, with an outpatient clinic in Millsboro.
