Course Overview:
The purpose of this course is to familiarize you with the methods used for efficiently managing the operation divisions of manufacturing and service based firms. The objective is to introduce you to the strategic and operational issues and decisions involved in managing the operating division. The operations function in the firm is concerned with managing the processes by which basic resource inputs (raw materials, labor, energy, etc.) are transformed into goods and services. The efficiency with which this transformation occurs is influenced by the choice of technologies, the design of the facilities, processes and jobs, and the effectiveness of the production plans. To understand this transformation and more, some of the topics we might cover include forecasting, quality management, location and layout decisions, inventory management, project management and some of the production control techniques such as just-in time systems. This course may help you appreciate how enterprises can organize and manage resources (manpower, technology, facilities, and materials) efficiently to create and deliver products and/or services that respond effectively to customer requirements and expectations.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of this course, students should have grounding in various aspects of POM which should equip them for their subsequent professional life.

Students should be able to:

·  Explain the role, contribution and importance of operations management to the firm and the economy

·  Describe the tenets of good quality and efficient operations

·  Apply appropriate forecasting techniques based on available resources and constraints

·  Effect reasonable decision making in the areas of facility location and layout

·  Apply practical implementation of good inventory management techniques to name a few areas...

Teaching Method:

This course may rely primarily upon lectures and videos with possible analysis of case studies supplemented by required reading materials, discussions and your participation. Our focus will be on understanding POM, together, in an interactive environment.

Critical Note:

Participate in the class discussions, based upon prior readings from previous courses and your broader reading of material related to the week’s discussions. The nature of the course will require you to draw knowledge from other areas in the social science discipline (e.g. Human Resource, Supply Chain and Change Management, Economics, Organizational Behavior, Strategy, Marketing etc.), in order to contribute effectively in class and also to adequately respond to case studies and examination questions.

You are expected to take initiative and read widely on the topics. Appropriate material is available within the university library system. Useful books include those on the subject of Production, Operation, Process and Supply Chain Management. Every effort will be made to link the issues under discussion to current events. You are highly encouraged to acquaint yourselves with current events in the field of POM.

It is important that you develop and maintain a habit of reading research articles from university databases, listen to International News and read magazines e.g. The Economist, Fortune, Forbes International, Time, Newsweek and Harvard Business Review.
