1. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

COURSE TITLE : / INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL NURSING

Fundamental concepts, knowledge and basic skills necessary for the practice of nursing in any clinical area.

2. PURPOSE:

This course is a requirement for the completion of the Baccalaureate Nursing Program. It content builds upon concepts acquired in Nursing 3021, providing students with basic skills necessary for the care of patients in future nursing courses throughout the curriculum. The focus is on the care of selected clients experiencing stress which is characterized by mild to moderate intensity relative stability and lengthy duration. An introduction to the theory and practice of medication and administration of fluids with emphasis on the concept of accountability. Legal and ethical considerations, health teaching and rehabilitation are included. Disruptions in human needs that result in fluid shifts which require replacement are included. Concepts and procedures related with the oxygenation process and situations that alter body image are discussed. Decision-making in the application of the nursing process in the health-illness continuum is applied to help the client regain an optimum is applied to help the client regain an optimum level of functioning.

3. COURSE OUTCOMES:

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

1.  Apply the nursing process through independent and collaborative efforts to promote, and maintain health, prevent and manage illnesses, promote rehabilitation and provide and of life care.

2.  Use skills of inquiry, analysis and research literacy to address individualize care and practice issues.

3.  Distinguish essential components of effective communication, interpersonal relationships, and leadership in each phase of the nursing process as it pertains to the provision of care.

4.  Discuss critical thinking, values, legal and ethical principles in problem solving processes.

5.  Values the nursing process as an essential tool to provide health care to the client system along their health-illness continuum.

4. REQUIREMENTS:

All Students are expected to:
a.  Complete all lessons.
b.  Do all assigned readings and related homework.
c.  Come to class prepared to discuss topics related to the course.
d.  Come to class all the time and on time.
e.  Pass all tests to receive credit for the course.

5. LABORATORY/FIELD WORK:

a. / Labs are considered a major part of the class, and all students are expected to participate. Radios, tape recorders, cell phones, beepers and other audio or video equipment are not permitted in the classroom, laboratory and clinical setting at any time.
b. / Smoking is not permitted in any area other than those areas designated for smoking or while wearing your uniform.
c. / Laboratory attendance is compulsory. Any absenteeism must be replaced within the next two weeks, with previous arrangements with the instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to be in clinical area at 7:30 AM.
d. / Students must attend laboratory according to uniform regulations.
e. / Tardiness beyond pre-conference hours will not be computed as laboratory; therefore the student must replace it.
f. / Laboratory experiences might be assigned out of the Mayagüez area. When possible transportation will be available. However, if for any reason transportation can not be provided students are responsible for making the necessary arrangements to be at the clinical setting (wherever it might be) by 7:30 AM.

g. / Students must be at the Nursing Department by the bus departing time as specified by their respective professors. No delays will be permitted for no-show student.
h. / All students must leave the clinical area when their professors do so. No student will be allow to stay or return to the clinical areas, to complete their assignments or duties without the proper supervision of their instructors.
i. / Students must include in the paper being handed-in, the evaluation criteria sheets provided for the several class requirements. Those who do not include the criteria 5 points will be discounted from the final grade of the paper.
j. / Work assignments must be hand written and should be handed in by the dateline established in the course outline. Five points will be taken for each day of delay including weekends and holidays.
k. / Students are responsible for copying and/or printing required educational material, as requested by the professor.
l. / Three tardiness to class or laboratory experiences will be recorded as one (1) absence. Attendance to class or laboratory experience will affect the final grade. Absences to laboratory sessions will affect students’ lab grade.
m. / Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Students who partially or completely copy other peoples work (as to include published authors) will receive a grade of “0” in the paper and will not be given the opportunity to repeat the paper.
n. / No course requirement will be accepted for final grading through e-mail.
o. / Cell phones will not be allow to be used as calculators when taking an exam.
p. / All class requirements must be completed. Nursing Process should be hand in a week after patient’s intervention, failure to comply will result in a final grade of zero.
q. / Students who are absent to a class/lab are responsible for the material covered and must coordinate and appointment with their respective professor for the review of the lost content/skills.
r. / Students must bring a calculator for each test session. Borrowing calculators will not be permitted.
s. / Module must be handed in on test day prior to taking the corresponding exam. No student will be allow to take the exam unless the module has been handed in.

t. / Students with a disability must report to the professor if special arrangements are needed in order to comply with course objectives.
u. / Computer use will not be allow in the classroom while the class is in session.
v. / Students must remain in the classroom during the whole class/lab period. A point will be deducted for leaving the classroom for unjustifiable reasons.
w. / Every institution required that each student hand in specific documents related to their policies for clinical practice of students. Students must hand in these documents as required by the professor 3 weeks before the first clinical experience.

6. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:

Lecture, demonstrations, laboratory practices, audiovisual aids, modules, study question, required and recommended reading, fieldtrips, simulated laboratory, written nursing process and clinical laboratory experience and pre-post conference. These are some of the instructional strategies used in this course.

8. DEPARTAMENTAL/CAMPUS POLICIES:

a. / The course must be approved with a grade of C or more. (See written Certification #83-2 of April 9, 1983).

9. STUDENT ASSISTANCE (IF APPLICABLE):

a. / Faculty will be available to provide individual assistance to students during office hours and/or as requested by student throughout previous appointments. (See office hours).
b. / Laboratory Technician at EE-213 will provide supervised practice to students by professor’s referrals or as requested by students throughout previous appointments.
c. / Upon request Nursing Laboratory Technician will provide or project for students the audiovisual materials assigned to supplement the teaching learning experiences of the course.
d. / The Librarian will assist students in their literature reviews as requested. (Main Library).
e. / Students can use the Computer Center to access information and utilize the local, university and global network.

10. ATTENDANCE AND BEHAVIOR:

a. / Class attendance: Class attendance is compulsory. The University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, reserves the right to deal at any time with individual cases of non-attendance. Professors are expected to record the absences of their students. Frequent absences affect the final grade, and may even result in total loss of credits. Arranging to make up work missed because of legitimate class absence is the responsibility of the student. (See Undergraduate Catalogue).
b. / Absence from examinations: Students are required to attend all examinations. If a student is absent form an examination for a justifiable reason acceptable to the professor, he or she will be given a special examination. Otherwise, he or she will receive a grade of zero of “F” in the examination missed. (See Undergraduate Catalogue).
c. / Final Examinations: Final written examinations must be given in all courses unless, in the judgment of the Dean, the nature of the subject makes it impracticable. Final examinations scheduled by arrangements must be given during the examination period prescribed in the Academic Calendar including Saturdays. (See Undergraduate Catalogue).

d. / Partial withdrawals: A student may withdraw from individual courses at any time during the term, but before the deadline established in the University Academic Calendar (See Undergraduate Catalogue).
e. / Complete withdrawals: A student may completely withdraw from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus, at any time up to the last day of classes. (See Undergraduate Catalogue).
f. / Disabilities: All the reasonable accommodations according to the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) Law will be coordinated with the Dean of Students and in accordance with the particular needs of the student.
