Course Description

This course is organized around grammatical structures introduced in ESOL 20G, in an ascending order of difficulty. The grammatical structures such as using simple transitions and degrees of comparison will be presented in meaningful contexts to improve students’ proficiency in the four language skill areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The focus of this course is on the application of correct grammar rules that will help students to communicate more clearly and comprehensibly in extended oral and written discourse.

Exit Criteria

After completing this level/course, learners will:

·  Demonstrate receptive and productive knowledge of all grammatical structures covered by correctly using them to communicate (oral and written forms).

·  Recognize grammatical errors and self correct their speech.

Course Scope and Sequence

Week 1: August 18 – 22

·  Adjectives - degrees of comparison & participial adjectives e.g. bored/boring

Week 11: August 25 – 29

·  Adverbs – adverbs of frequency and position of adverbs

Week 111: September 1 – 5

Simple transitions – to add information, to show contrast e.g. yet, although

TEST # 1 Adjective and Adverbs

Week IV: September 8 – 12

Punctuation – commas in compound sentences and transition signals

Week V: September 15 - 19

·  Conjunctions – so, or, nor

TEST # 2 Simple transitions and Punctuation

Week VI: September 22 – 26

Verbs – present and past (simple vs. continuous/progressive)

Week VII: September 29 – October 3

·  Prepositions – of movement, for , and since

·  Noncountable nouns

Week VIII: October 6 – 10

·  Pronouns – demonstrative and possessive

Course Requirements:

·  Please bring an English dictionary to class daily.

·  ALL assignments MUST be submitted on time.

Project / Create an interactive grammar game based on topics covered (due date Oct 4, 2008) / 25%

Class Polices

·  Attendance – as per UB’s attendance policy. Facilitator will take attendance at the beginning of each class.

·  Tardiness – Tardiness can be distracting to both your classmates and facilitators. If you arrive to class late, please enter the room quietly. You are responsible for papers handed out during your absence.

·  Electronic devices – Cell phones should be put on silent or vibrate mode and answered outside the classroom.

·  Test – Students are expected to be in class for all tests. If you miss a test without any excuse or permission you will automatically receive a 0. In the case of illness a medical certificate to substantiate your claim must be provided. Other reasons such as personal emergencies, the lecturer must be informed no later than the next meeting of the class. Remember that tests make up 45% of your final grade.
