“I Am” Poem
For this project, you will write two “I Am” poems. You may choose two characters and write a poem for each, showing how the two characters are different. Or, you may choose one character and show how he or she changed from the beginning of the novel to the end of the novel. You may choose from the following characters: Cole Matthews, Mrs. Matthews, Mr. Matthews, Nathaniel Blackwood (Cole’s lawyer), Peter Driscal, Judge Tanner, Edwin, Garvey, the Keeper.
If you would like to do this project, you will need to pick up the assignment sheet from Mrs. Hart. It contains the format for an “I Am” poem.

Totem Pole
For this project, you will create a totem pole. You may choose to depict the life of a character from the novel. Or, you may choose to depict your own life. You will create your totem pole using a paper towel tube. You must have at least four animals on your totem pole. Feel free to research the Tlingit totem poles before creating yours. You might also reference the novel for ideas. You will also need to write a paragraph explaining your totem pole (what animals did you choose and why, whose story are you telling, etc).
