TOMBALL INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

Algebra 2 PAP Course Syllabus

L. Winfield

Course Prerequisite: Algebra I / Geometry

Algebra II – Pre-AP is a rigorous course of study requiring all concepts from the Algebra II TEKS

and then some additional material will be covered as well. This course is a firm foundation for future

AP mathematics courses.

Algebra II places an emphasis on the formal structure of mathematics. Current technology will be used as necessary for concept development and extension. Some of the following are topics that will be discussed.

Concepts and skills associated with open sentences, properties of relations and functions, the complex number system, polynomials and rational expressions, systems of equations, quadratic functions, conic sections and systems of quadratics. Also concepts and skills associated with higher degree polynomial functions, logarithms, matrices, sequences and series.

Course Objectives: Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)

· The student will demonstrate an understanding of the foundational properties and attributes of functions.

· The student will demonstrate an understanding of the use of representational tools to solve problems.

· The student will demonstrate an understanding of the properties of quadratic functions.

· The student will demonstrate an understanding of the connections between algebraic and geometric representations of quadratic functions and relations.

· The student will demonstrate an understanding of the properties of square root functions.

· The student will demonstrate an understanding of the properties of rational functions.

· The student will demonstrate an understanding of the properties of exponential and logarithmic functions.

**A graphing calculator is STRONGLY recommended for use in this course. We will use a TI-84 in class.

Grading Procedures:

Daily 30% Homework and Quizzes (quizzes count as three daily grades)

Major 70% Tests and Projects

Make-up work is in accordance with the district policy.

Schedule:

· Weekly schedule will be posted on the whiteboard in my classroom.

Calculator Use:

· Calculators may not be allowed on some tests.

· The TI-89 calculator will not be allowed on any quiz or test.

· Students will not be allowed to use a personal calculator on any quiz or test.

Make-up Work:

· It is your responsibility to get make-up assignments completed within the allotted time.

· Make-up quizzes and tests will only be given before or after school.

Tutorials:

· I will be available for tutoring in the mornings on Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 6:50a.m.-7:20 and most afternoons from 2:30 – 3:15 p.m.

Six Weeks Tests:

The Six Weeks test will be given during the last week of the six weeks and will contain material from all topics discussed during the grading period. The six weeks test grade counts and can replace the lowest test grade.

No Credit for course if AEP Placement:

"A Dual Credit/AP/Pre-AP student receiving a long term placement in AEP (more than 15 days) will be exited from the Dual Credit/AP/Pre-AP course and changed to a grade level placement for that course. As a result of this change, the student will no longer be receiving quality points for the assigned course. Dual Credit students affected by this will need to withdraw from Lonestar College as per college procedures or risk receiving a failing grade on their college transcript."
